September 2019

9/30/19

Good Monday morning,

This week really is the end of September and the start of October.

If you are waking up today, you may not know what time of the year it is. You would likely think Fall.

This morning it is quite brisk in the Santa Ynez valley, 41 degrees to start the day.

Santa Barbara is 12 degrees warmer at 53.

This week we are looking at a great week to work outdoors.

In my eyes it does not get better than this. Sunny highs in the low 70s and lows in the 50s in Santa Barbara.
https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-119.68917846679688&lat=34.422204127692495#.XZHuiMplCfA

Valley will also be great, but it will just start out a little cooler and warm up a little more. 40 degree temp changes night to day.

Gaviota to SB will likely see some sundowner winds again tonight.

Tuesday will be just like today. Sunny cool and a few degrees warmer.

Wednesday we start a little warm up, but still cooler with highs climbing into the upper 70s.

The weekend is trending to be warmer, with offshore flow.

Bottom line, it is looking to be a really pleasant week to welcome in Fall and October.

Enjoy ….

9/27/19

Good Friday morning,

Let’s start with Thursday. Was that a funky day? 6am we started with temp of 72 degrees, because of the stalled low spinning counter clockwise over the Nevada-CA.

Then in the afternoon, the fog rolled in and kept it cool all day. It felt quite tropical.

That’s what happens when lows from the south drift our way.

Today, the low pressure system to the east has exited. All eyes now go to the north where low pressure in Washington state will affect our weather through Tuesday.

Today some areas especially valleys and mountains are starting with some drizzle.

Fog is over all of us. Today will be another cool day.

Tonight and Saturday morning we have the best chance for drizzle and light rain. Saturday will be cool and foggy most of the day.

Highs will be in the mid 70s everywhere. Fog will likely clear in reverse Saturday with coastal areas clearing first and valleys keeping the fog longer.

Sunday the low hangs around, so expect another cooler day.

Tuesday, the low exits and high pressure and off shore event will begin.

Temps will warm up.

https://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

Enjoy the cooler weekend.

9/26/19

Good Thursday morning,

Are you ready for a big cool down?

We have a few different systems to look at today and into the weekend.

Let’s start with the low pressure system that drifted up from Arizona. This is spinning counter clockwise and sitting in place with little movement.

Very unusual for us to see this.

https://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

Now look to the north at the Canada boarder. There is a front pushing into Washington state. This will be the trigger for the big cool down.

So what’s happening today….

We will see some mid to high clouds from the system to the southeast. You might not even see them where fog exists.

It will be a much cooler day, especially in the valleys, where highs will be in the upper 70s down 15 degrees. Coastal we should remain in the low 70s.

Tonight, the Marine layer thickens up and will produce a foggy damp morning overnight.

We will wake up to plenty of dampness Friday morning. Drizzle is possible.

Fog should stick around most of the day, with little to no clearing.

Friday night into Saturday morning, the marine layer should bring some drizzle and possible light rain. Saturday will be the coolest day, with highs from 65 to 75 degrees.

Fog will stick around most of the day until the front moves through.

Behind the front northwest winds will bring up temps in Santa Barbara just in time for Rod Stewart at the bowl.

Some sundowner winds….

Sunday, we will transition into more seasonable weather, and Monday the fog should go away.

Next week is looking non eventful at this point. More to come later.

Enjoy!

9/25/19

Good Wednesday morning,

Great show at the Bowl last night. Steely Dan was great, and the weather was even better. Love nights where it stays in the 70s throughout the show.

FYI if anyone is looking for tickets to Rod Steward Saturday night, I have 4 center seat just over from the sound board.

I forgot we have a wedding to attend. If you are interested email me. I paid $205.00 each for them.

Now the weather ….

Take a look at the low spinning down by the boarder of Mexico and CA and Arizona.

This has come up from the south and will give the southern part of the state a good chance for rain today.

For us, this will not affect us at all, but it is interesting to see on the satellite, it looks like a little hurricane spinning.

https://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

Coming back to our local area, we will see some big changes over the next 5 days.

Mainly with high temps of the day.

For today, it will still be a warm day. Especially in the valleys, with Santa Ynez hitting around 95. Coastal areas will cool to the mid 70s.

However, Gaviota is starting out at 76 right now because of down sloping winds.

If you were outside last night at 9pm you would have felt that warm breeze come up.

I was at the County Bowl and felt the temps jump around 10 degrees. This was not due to the great crowd and show.

Even though Steely Dan was great, it was the down sloping winds compressing and heating up the surface temps.

Today we have a mixed bag, with warm inland and some coastal fog for us. All being said we are in for a cool down starting Thursday.

Thursday, we turn to a onshore flow. This will cool down temps for all. Coastal areas will remain in the lower 70s, but valleys will drop 10 to 15 degrees.

Coastal areas will see more marine influence and damp morning. The cooling trend will continue through the weekend.

Friday, a low pressure system over Washington moves closer to us. This is going to give us a heavy marine layer and possibility of drizzle.

We will likely see fog most of the day. Saturday the same thing, fog and drizzle in the morning.

Sunday we begin to rebound slightly, but temps will be cool with  some minimal warming.

Have a great day.

9/24/19

Good Tuesday morning,

Interesting weather this week. We will be all over the board. It is feeling and starting to look like Fall.

Today, we will have a Santa Ana wind event mid morning in Ventura south. Even in Montecito hills. This will be short lived and will really do nothing more than heat up the day. Coastal areas and coastal valleys should be 10 to 20 degrees hotter than yesterday. Expect plenty of triple digits in areas like woodlands hills, and other coastal valleys.

SB will be in the upper 80s and low tonight of around 67. It should be a great night at the bowl to watch Steely Dan.

The Santa Ynez valley will be around 102 today with low of 56 tonight. That is almost a 50 degree swing!

https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-119.66514587402342&lat=34.43183254485123#.XYoQQMplCfA

Wednesday, we should have the same conditions, but not as strong of an off shore flow.

There is also a system with some moisture drifting up from the south. This will create a 20% chance for rain in LA. It does not look like it will affect us.

Thursday will be cooler with low pressure beginning to move into the pacific northwest.

Friday more of the same, as the low pressure system starts to drop south.

Now Friday night into Saturday is when we see the chance of drizzle or light rain. 20% to 40% . Regardless it will be cooler and damp in the morning with lots of fog.

This is a system coming out of the north, Wednesday in LA out of the south. So you are not confused !!!

Changes and fall is in the air as we begin to see more of a fluctuation in temps and conditions through the week.

Stay tuned, and see you at the Bowl tonight ….

9/23/19

Good Monday morning,

This week, the weather is going to be all over the map for our area.

Today we are starting out with some low fog. Normally I can see the glow of lights at Brian’s house. Today it is blanketed with some fog.

The fog will burn off quickly and highs will be cooler than the weekend around 80, but 10 to 15 degrees cooler in the valleys.

Tonight and through Wednesday, we will see winds turn off shore and bring Santa Ana wind event and hot temps. Valleys will see triple digit temps.

Thursday, a cool down. This will last into Saturday. This is thanks to low pressure and some moisture seeping up out of Mexico.

This will give us a chance of light rain and or drizzle. This will be mainly to the south, but could affect Santa Barbara.

https://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

Starting tonight, the fire danger is elevated. Thanks to the Santa Ana and northeast winds that will affect Ventura south.

Stay tuned and have a great week.

9/20/19 Weekend Weather

Good Friday morning,

The weekend is right around the corner, and our weather will be great.

Warming temps, off shore winds. Spell dry sunny weather. Highs in the mid 80s through next Wednesday. We will also see off shore northeast winds affecting Santa Ana areas at time. Nothing over the top, but it will keep us warm.

Take a look at the satellite picture. Cabo San Lucas is not the place to be this weekend.

https://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

You can see the tropical storm moving close. They will get hit with 80 mile wind gust and a lot of rain.

David will send me pictures, david hang in there, and be safe

We’re going to Disneyland Saturday …..

Active in the pacific:

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/?epac

9/19/19

9s and 1s in the date today…. it also looks like we will have a cooler day, with highs in the 70s. This will make for a perfect Thursday.

https://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

A low pressure system is passing though tonight and warmer weather is on tap for the weekend.

Looks like Santa Ana winds are also in the forecast for tonight and Monday. (Northeast) temps for the weekend should be in the low to mid 80s.

Next week we are looking at more of the same, with no real changes in sight here!!

If you are going to Mexico, there is lots of excitement there.

A Cat 1 hurricane is clamping down on Porta Vallarta today and will hit Cabo San Lucas late Friday.

For us, just a nice weekend ahead. There goes another week, my goodness, they fly by.

Enjoy, the weekend.

Tuesday 9/17/19

Good Tuesday morning,

Hope you enjoyed the picture of my roof. I accidentally sent them to the entire weather group….Oops!!

Our weather this week is really going to be consistent through Thursday.

We have a few systems that are dropping down from the Pacific Northwest.

https://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

These are going to keep us cooler and bring up the north sundowner winds each evening. Last night the winds were greatest in Gaviota and Goleta at 25 miles an hour. Just light winds in SB.

The north winds will likely keep the fog out of SB and Goleta. Fog in other areas should clear by late morning.

https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?x=193&y=118&site=lox&zmx=&zmy=&map_x=193&map_y=118#.XYDY18plCfD

More wind Wednesday and Thursday evenings with highs around 80. Just pleasant weather.

Friday we will transition into a warmer weekend with temps jumping into the mid 80s.

All in all, great weather here. Looking into the southern pacific down by Cabo, the weekend weather is not looking good for them. The seas are quite active with 4 hurricanes or tropical depressions moving to the north. We will start to hear more about these in the next few days. I don’t think I would want to go to Cabo this weekend 😬.

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/gtwo.php?basin=epac&fdays=5

Have you noticed that the light of day is getting a lot later now. Almost 6:30 before daylight starts.

Have a great day.

9/16/19 Monday Morning Again

Good Monday morning,

The work week is going to be nice with cooler temps all week.

Looking at the satellite, you can see the front washing out from the north as it approaches California.

This has increased the on shore flow and brought in a 1300 foot marine layer. This will keep us cooler for the day, with fog until late morning.

Highs for the day will be around 80.

https://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

Tonight we will have a little sundowner wind event from the north. Winds will not be too crazy, but you will know they are there.

Most of the week has the same forecast, however, Thursday should be the coolest day of the week.

Friday, we begin to rebound with temps warming us up slightly for the weekend, but it will be much cooler then this past one.

Looking South of the border, there is lots of action in the pacific.

We have 1 hurricane and 2 other tropical depressions that look like they will turn into hurricanes in the next 2 to 5 days.

Cabo will need to keep a close eye on these.

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/gtwo.php?basin=epac&fdays=5

Ok you are up to date. Have a nice cooler work week …

9/16/19 Changes in the Air

Good Sunday morning,

Hope everyone had a great Saturday. It certainly was a hot one.

This morning I work up to a little fog. This is a welcomed change. We are shifting from high pressure to onshore flow.

You can see southwest flow this morning and low pressure pushing down out of the Pacific Northwest.

https://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

Looks like we will have another sundowner wind event on Monday night. If you were awake Friday night the sundowner winds warmed Goleta to 91 degrees at 11pm.

This is thanks to winds coming down the hills and compressing, allowing the air to heat up. Of course I was sound asleep, but  Mike was there to report this.

Cooling will occur next week, with marine layer and onshore flow. Looks like Thursday we are even looking at a few showers, more likely some morning drizzle.

We will see how that develops as the week goes on.

Next weekend looks to be warming up again with high pressure building in.

Have a great Sunday, coastal a few degrees of cooling with some high clouds from the southwest.

Here are a few photos from Elings yesterday, me and A few of the boys took a ride.  I had to stop by on my way home and take a picture of the glowing hot air.

9/16/19 Weekend Weather

Was it hot enough for you yesterday? After a start of 60 degrees on Friday, the temp rose to 93 degrees in SB. This hot weather will continue through the weekend.

We can sum up our weekend weather with 1 word, “🥵 Hot “!

Highs are going to be in the upper 80s coastal and close to triple digits in the valleys.

Heat will begin to back off on Monday with low pressure bringing on shore flow and marine layer for the first half of next week.

My Recomendation for today is the Beach. Me and Pearl will be there early for our weekend run. At least Pearl will be running, I will be there with my limp.

Enjoy the heat…. summer weather is in high gear over Southern California.

Since it is Saturday and I have a little more time then during the week, lets talk about El Nino chance.

It looks like we will have El Nino chance to be higher then normal through the fall, then becoming 50 to 55% chances for the first of the year.

https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/enso_advisory/ensodisc.shtml

I think we will have another average to above average year. Of course the first rain arrives right around Halloween.

Some 6 weeks away, this is usually on the lighter side. ¼ inch at best (normally).

The current water temp at Hendry beach is a nice 67 degrees. Perfect to cool off on what will be a hot day.

http://www.surf-forecast.com/breaks/Hendry-s-Beach-Arroyo-Burro/seatemp

Right now it is low tide at the beach, so for the morning dog runners it is perfect. See you there in 30 minutes.

http://www.surf-forecast.com/breaks/Hendry-s-Beach-Arroyo-Burro/tides/latest

Have a great day!

9/13/19 Weekend Weather

Good Friday morning,

This graphic pretty much spells it out.

https://www.weather.gov/lox

This weekend is going to be Hot. Especially in Santa Ynez and all valley areas. Looks like you will top the triple digits.

Santa Barbara is going to be hot also with highs in the upper 80s during the day, with mild nights.

It might be fun to check out Elings park and the Hot air balloon and wine festivals Saturday from 5pm to 9pm.

http://elingsparkwinefest.org/

Anything you do, it will be a great weekend in Santa Barbara and at the Beach. If you live in the valleys, a pool or lake is the better spot.

The entire weekend will be on the warmer side. Monday, we start to transition into a cool down where low pressure moves into the north.

We will likely see some fog and possibly drizzle on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Out in the southern Pacific, there are lots of tropical stuff brewing, the good news is most of the Action is over the Ocean.

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/gtwo.php?basin=epac&fdays=5

We will  have to watch the system furthest to the south, this one might hug the Coast more. This is still a good week away from knowing where it will affect.

Ok, enjoy your weekend!

Full Moon 9/12/19 and Warmer Weather on Tap

Good Thursday morning,

If you were not up early enough with me, here is what the full moon looked like at 4:30 AM.

For our weather, you can see we are starting out with clear skies and soon to be sunny and warm conditions. High pressure is building back in and we will have hot weather through the weekend. Inland areas will see triple digit temps. Coastal in the mid to upper 80s. Great weather just in time for all the UCSB students to start returning.

This weekend should be really nice at Elings park with the hot air balloon and wine tasting. Should be a cool site. I will need to check it out.

Next week we look to start the week with a cool down. Low pressure in the Pacific Northwest will cause us to bring back the marine layer and cooler temps.

Until then it will get warmer each day ….

Good news is the weekend is close.

9/11/19

By Jack Martin on Sep 11, 2019 at 02:53 PM

It is hard to believe it has been 17 years since 9/11. The memory of that morning is planted in my brain forever. I remember this morning like it was recent.

Time flies too fast….

For us today, weather wise, there is low pressure in the Pacific Northwest. This is not doing much for us.

Today will be the last cooler day before the warm up begins for the rest of the week.

Inland areas will become particularly warm starting Thursday and through Saturday.

https://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

Looks like a big cool down starting next Monday when an unseasonable large system arrives in the Pacific Northwest. This will bring us a marine layer and cooler temps.

Tonight watch for the full moon. Around 5 am it makes the skies glow from the west.

Enjoy.

9/10/19

Good Monday morning,

We survived the weekend winds with no real fires. There is a mulch fire in Goleta, but seems to be under control.

From Mike:

Winds did vary in areas throughout the weekend. It seems like the forecast worked out ok. Winds gusted to almost 70 mph above the gaviota tunnel, which probably means 30-40 at the rest stop, and the hills above Montecito gusted into the 40s. I had about 30 at my place off north Patterson. So the distribution was on track. Probably the one strike out was the lack of single digit humidities which was really the trigger for the red flag warnings. Looks like the lowest it got was maybe around 20% but it wasn’t for very long or where the winds were strongest.
For this week, we will be cooler with low pressure system over head, giving us cooler temps through Wednesday.

Winds will still be around through Tuesday, but much lighter. Mainly in the Montecito hills.

Late in the week we are looking at a warm up and off shore flow.

This means we will heat up.

Enjoy the week.

9/8/19 Wind Update

Good Sunday morning,

Winds last night made it as far south as the San Marcos Pass. SCE shut down the power on some 600 homes, north of Goleta.

The winds did come up in Goleta north, but Santa Barbara had little wind.

Today we will have another warm day, with another round of sundowner winds tonight from the Northwest.

Looks like winds will change to the Northeast around midnight and this will affect the Montecito hills.

Winds will be moderate with hills 30 to 40 miles an hour. Coast 10 to 25 miles an hour.

Today highs will be in the upper 80s and low 90s. Highs of the day will likely come this evening.

Monday into midweek, we will begin a cool down with temps in the 70s and low 80s.

Have a great Sunday.

9/7/19

Good Saturday morning,

An interesting day and evening ahead.

Low pressure is building in today. This is going to create some wind during the day, but the real event will be later in the day, evening until midnight. Winds today will be all over the board, Southwest, south. It changes this afternoon to west and northeast. Northeast winds will really affect the Montecito hills. Northwest winds affects Gaviota, Goleta and San Marcos Pass areas.

The weather models are showing both solutions. We will have to see how this plays out for the wind event.

Winds today will compress and drive the temps up tonight into the 90s. It will be a warmer night. Wind speeds in the mountains 40 to 60 miles an hour, coastal 20 to 30. The same is for Sunday night with another round of sundowner winds, but Monday we start a cool down. Highs will be in the 70s and bring on a marine layer.

The question on weather SCE will shut down power is still in in the Air. There are 4 zones that can be affected. Take a look at the link, it will show you.

https://www.edhat.com/news/noleta-removed-from-possible-power-outage

Have a great Saturday, and we will see what happens later in the day.

9/6/19 Weekend Weather

Good Friday morning,

Wow, September has started out with great summer weather. Evenings  and sunsets are fantastic. This was my house last night.

BackYard9919

Today we will begin a transition into low pressure pushing the high pressure to the south. This will create WIND this evening and especially Saturday night.

Sundowner winds will come up this evening in Gaviota then move south to us on Saturday. This will give coastal areas winds in the evening of 15 to 30 miles an hour, mountains 40 to 50 miles an hour.

The biggest concern is always the chance of a fire. Where most of our hills have burned, anything is possible with winds. Of course this is just the beginning of Santa Ana and sundowner wind season.

As far as temps go. It will be quite warm through Sunday with sundowner winds, Goleta and Santa Barbara will see there highs of the day in the evenings. Highs will be in the 90s with warm nights.

You will want AC the next few days …. “Brother B !!! ” it also looks like some folk might have there power turned off. SCE says around 4600 customers in west Goleta and near the Pass might have their power turned off.

Hot weather through the weekend, cooling starts on Monday with highs going into the upper 70s and low 80s, as low pressure system rolls in.

Have a great weekend, see you at the Hayward lumbers 100 years.

ALSO, Thank you for everyone voting Action Roofing the Best of Santa Barbara (you all rock ) maybe next year best weather man too !! and worst speller …

9/5/2019 Forecast

Good morning,

I thought I would sneak in a forecast this morning.

We have had a fairly warm humid week, and that trend will continue through Friday.

If you take a look at the satellite picture, you will see the subtropical monsoonal moisture rising up from the south.

This can create some rain drops or showers over the mountains. These have remained south of us, but are drifting further to the north today.

https://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

Friday, the moisture tap should shut down as low pressure moves in from the north.

This will create some sundowner winds on Saturday evening. Winds will not be extreme, but could be in the 30s in the hills and teens locally.

Always, this time of year we watch these because of the possible fire danger. Sundowner winds will heat up the air and we will likely see the highs for the day around 6pm Saturday.

I even heard that EDISON is looking to possibly shut off power in the hills where this could occur. “I am glad I have solar with a battery system …. “

There also has been a run on the sale of generators with this news.

With low pressure arriving, this will get rid of the humidity and leave us with hot weather through the weekend.

Early next week, we should start with a cool down.

Enjoy the summer weather.
