October 2020

10/30/2020

Almost 10,20,30 for the date. Just 2 more days of October, they will be days of fantastic weather.

Just think, you could be in Boston at 30 degrees, or Chicago 38.

Last night was also perfect to be outdoors. Warm and another great sunset.

Sunset10302020

The forecast is really easy. Just Indian Summer weather in Southern California.

Highs will be 70s and 80s along the coast through Tuesday and 80s and 90s in the valleys.

The only Bummer is we will lose day light at night on Sunday because of the roll back of the clocks.

Adam reminded me that we will have the Blue Harvest moon on Halloween.

This should be a pretty sight, check it out.

Halloween will be different with no trick or treaters, but we take 2020 in stride with all changes.

It looks like Monday will be the hottest day of the next 7 with off shore flow and 80s along the coast, 90s in the valleys.

In the extended forecast, late next weekend we have a possible chance of rain.

Don’t panic, it is way in the future.

For now here is your agenda for the weekend:

1. Go to the beach

2. Enjoy warm nights and sunsets

3. Check out the blue moon Saturday night

4. Turn back clocks 3 am Sunday morning

5. Most of all smile, laugh and enjoy why we chose to live in California

Have a great weekend!

Good Thursday morning,

Just great weather on tap for the end of October and the beginning of November.

Yes, Thanksgiving is less than 30 days away. Also on Sunday early morning, 3am we turn back the clocks.

This will allow all you late nighters to get an extra hour of sleep. For me I worry that I will now be waking up at 2 or 3 am each day.

As far as the weather goes we will have perfect weather for this time of year.

Cooler nights, but warm days. Highs in the 70s along the coast and 80s in the valleys.

As we approach the weekend, we will see some 80s along the coast and wow 90s in the valleys.

40 degree temp differences from day time to night time in the valleys.

In SB where real estate cost is higher, swings will be 20 to 25 degrees.

Here is the sky view. You can see all systems circling around the dome of high pressure over California.

This is why we are willing to pay higher taxes 🤔😩in this state.

https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES/sector_band.php?sat=G17§or=wus&band=GEOCOLOR&length=12

Enjoy the perfect weather, rain is not in sight, but it will be in the next few weeks.

Have a great day and weekend!

Good Wednesday morning,

This is a cool loop show how the day light turns to night over the Pacific Ocean.

You can also see how off shore flow is keeping any and all clouds out to sea:

https://www.eldoradoweather.com/current/satellite/goes-west-fd-geocolor.html

The real story however is those Dodgers, World Series campions for the first time since 1988.

When Kirk Gibson hit the walk off in the first game of the 88 World Series.

I remember that day so perfect because my son was two years old and my brother and I were yelling and excited.

That made my son so excited that he grabbed an egg off the counter and threw it at the TV. That was the start of his baseball dreams.

The game kept me up past my bedtime, but it was worth it. 32 years is a long time.

Ok back to the weather.

We will have continued sunshine. If you are up early with me, walk outside and look at the sky.

The crisp clear morning stars are brightening the skies. You can see all the stars up there. (If you slept in here is a photo)

Stars10282020

Today the winds are going to die down to the south and everyone will just see a great day.

Sunny and warm with highs in the 70s and some 80s. Tonight, SB will see some mild sundowner winds, from the northwest.

Thursday and through the weekend, we will not see much of a change. Great weather For the last week in October.

Looks into next week, no rain in sight and another Santa Ana wind event Sunday night into Monday.

Enjoy the day, I know Dodgers and fans are going to….

10/27/2020

Good Tuesday morning,

If you are waking up in Solvang it is a crisp 37 degrees. Yes that’s chilly.

https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-120.11764526367186&lat=34.60269355405187#.X5gf-i0iefA

Orange County, wind and fires are your morning. Off shore winds will make the coast of Long Beach and Newport smoky.

Here in SB, 52 degrees starts your day, with a high of 70. Perfect fall weather for us.

Wednesday, the winds will die down in the Santa Ana wind locations and we will start a mild warm up. Nights will get a little warmer and days the same. Highs will be in the mid 70s along the coast and low 80s in the valleys.

Looks like nice weather through early next week, with maybe some fog returning Friday along the coast. Just nice calm weather to come in the last week of October.

Yes next week welcomes in November, but for now go Dodgers 5pm start tonight game 6.

Have a great day, get the sweet shirt and jacket out till noonish.

10/26/2020

Good Monday morning,

This is a great graphic to see what is happening with the off shore winds.

Take a look at the north to East to west winds pushing any marine layer well off shore.

https://www.eldoradoweather.com/current/satellite/goes-west-fd-geocolor.html

The story for the first half on the week will be off shore winds and lots of sunshine.

For Santa Barbara, there will be no wind just sunshine and seasonable weather in the low to mid 70s with nights in the upper 40s and low 50s.

https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-119.68753053434193&lat=34.43002018016533

Santa Ynez will be upper 70s and low 80s for highs, but nights will be chilly in the upper 30s.

https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-120.06436165608464&lat=34.59387620346422

Ventura and south, you will feel the winds for the next 2 days. Then wednesday, things calm with nice weather for the rest of the week.

https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-119.03274531103669&lat=34.22542902217181

Bottom line we will see nice weather with dry conditions through Sunday,  for all.

Enjoy the sunshine.

Jack Martin

10/22/2020

Good Thursday morning,

It is wet out there this morning. The drizzle has dampened the streets and the marine layer is 3500 feet thick.

This will lead to a wet start to the day and likely no clearing. Also the wet streets are leading to accidents. 101 at Gaviota has 6 different accidents this morning, another one on the 154.

This pattern will continue into Friday where we should have another damp morning. Highs will be chilly with upper 60s along the coast and low 70s in the valleys.

Wow what a difference a week makes when we were in the 90s to 100.

For the weekend we will remain foggy, cool and damp. The low pressure system moves in. This will likely produce some light amounts of wetness, but we’re talking 1/10th of an inch.

This is not much to talk about, but it is telling us the rainy season is coming.

Sunday will give us the best chance for light rain, coastal foothills are the most likely to see this.

Next week we will see the onshore flow turn to off shore. This will create a Santa Ana wind event Tuesday and Wednesday.

At this point we are looking at some stronger winds from Ventura south. Temps, however, will climb some, but stay relatively low for Santa Ana conditions. Really 70s and 80s will be the highs.

Santa Barbara will not feel the winds, it will remain in the 70s to low 80s.

As we can all see and feel the changes in the air, fall is upon us.

Enjoy, the cooler weather.

Watch out while driving this morning. Oil on the roads and wet streets are leading to accidents.

Jack Martin

10/21/2020

Good Wednesday morning,

So much for the sunshine and warmer days.

Fall is officially here, last night I even turned on my fireplace for the first time in 6 months.

Where chill was in the air here, the Dodgers were heating it up against Tampa.

Today we have another cooler day. With fog and highs barely to 70s:
https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES/sector_band.php?sat=G17§or=wus&band=GEOCOLOR&length=12

The valleys are starting with fog also, this will lead to upper 70s for them.

The cooling trend continues through the weekend. Thursday should be a lot like today.

Then Friday we could see some drizzle or even light rain into Saturday morning.

Chances of light rain is looking a little more Bullish, but regardless if it comes, it will be 1/10th of a inch and at 30% chance.

The best chance for rain is really in LA on Saturday.

The weekend overall will be cooler.

Next week we are looking at a strong Santa Ana wind event, Tuesday into Wednesday.

Looks like 70s and 80s, but more importantly is the strong winds that will come with it.

More of that to come.

As we fastly approach Halloween, this tradition brings us our first 1/4 inch of rain.

I don’t think COVID can stop this event, but we will see.

Enjoy the cooler Temps.

Jack Martin

10/20/2020

Good Tuesday morning,

A cooler week will continue, with a few twists. Today we are starting out again with fog.

https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES/sector_band.php?sat=G17§or=wus&band=GEOCOLOR&length=12

Today, however, we should see a faster burn off with off shore winds starting later today.

Wednesday should lead to sunnier skies with less fog. Highs will still stay in the mid to upper 70s along the coast and mid 80s inland.

Thursday brings back some fog, with cooler days by a few degrees.

Friday looks to bring a weak low, that will affect our weather Friday through the weekend. We are looking at some drizzle and even light rain is possible.

Most definitely a deep marine layer, that will keep the coast cloudy most of the day.

Next week, expect another warm up with one more Santa Ana condition.

Tonight is the dodgers game and if you are up early or go to bed late, check out the skies with lots of shooting stars from Orionid .

This will peak tonight and early Wednesday morning when Lynn and I get up:

https://www.space.com/34373-orionid-meteor-shower-guide.html

Best viewing will be after midnight and early morning hours.

Enjoy, and have a great day!

10/19/2020

Good Monday morning,

Hope everyone had a great weekend. Now it is back to the work place for another week of fun.

Our forecast for the week is going to be more in agreement to everyone. Last weeks heat will turn to seasonable nice.

Highs on the coast in the 70s and valleys in the 80s with some marine layer to start this morning.

https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES/sector_band.php?sat=G17§or=wus&band=GEOCOLOR&length=12

The Santa Ynez valley is also getting to the point where we will be seeing 40 degree temp changes day to nights.

Today starting out in the upper 40s with highs in the upper 80s. Time to layer up, with sweat shirts.

This week really does not give a lot of excitement weather wise, but the Dodgers certainly did.

The come back kids down 3-1 in the series, then battled back again last night to win 4-3, taking them to the world series.

Tuesday looks to give us an off shore event which will warm the coast slightly, but valleys will cool off. Wednesday will be a carbon copy of Tuesday.

Thursday and Friday, the marine layer returns and some more fog in the forecast.

Seasonable temps will be at normal or slightly above.

The weekend looks like a few weak systems in the north will sweep through and really do nothing then keep the marine layer around.

Monday we look to set up another Santa Ana event…..

And that’s your week, enjoy.

Dodgers Tuesday 4:30 pm.

Jack Martin

10/15/2020

Good Thursday morning,

Tax day for those extensions. Finally a dodgers win…

Last night I was driving to LA at 8 pm and the winds were blowing along the 101 and the 405 with temps at 89 degrees.

This has created an new fire in Redlands, so here we go again. We will see the same conditions for the next 2 days.

Along the coast we have actually developed a Eddie off Catalina, bringing some fog from long beach to SB.

https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-119.69137564860283&lat=34.4284343936438

Any fog that arrives along the coast will be short lived, as off shore winds will knock it out early in the morning.

Today the heat wave continues, I think everyone knows by now. It will be hot through Friday along the coast, and through Saturday in the valleys.

Highs 90s to low 100s.

It looks like some fog will cool the coast to the low 80s on Saturday. Still hot in the valleys.

Next week we are looking to cool to normal temps for this time of year.

Have a great day, off to Cabo for the weekend 😊

Jack Martin

10/14/2020

Good Wednesday morning,

As advertised, the heat is here. It looks like we will remain in the 90s through at least Saturday, Along the coast and near or above the century mark in the valleys.

It also looks like Friday will now be the hottest day.
https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-119.69123840332028&lat=34.41370754457091#.X4buTi0iefA

If you are looking for relief, the beach is the spot. We were there last night for the 🌅 sunset and it was spectacular.

Sunset101420201
Sunset101420202

The forecast is actually easy.

Today through Saturday will be 90s coastal and 100 in the valleys.

Looks like Thursday night into Friday, the Santa Ana wind will kick up stronger and heat us warmer than we are currently. Which is still hot.

The heat wave will begin to break on Sunday, but do not expect a lot of relief.

Next week will be cooler, but that’s easy to say.

Check out the sunset last night at Hendry’s beach. It is worth a trip there, but parking is always a premium….

Stay cool and hydrated. We are in for hot days ahead.

Jack Martin

10/13/2020

Good Tuesday morning,

Outside of the weather we have Amazon prime days, and the new Apple phone is being released today. Dodgers lost and tax extensions are due in 2 days. â˜¹

It is going to be a hot day and only get hotter on Wednesday.

Early this morning it was still in the 70s and low 80s in the foothills of SLO and LA.

Clear skies out there:
https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES/sector_band.php?sat=G17§or=wus&band=GEOCOLOR&length=12

Today we will be cranking up the heat for everyone:
https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?x=194&y=120&site=lox&zmx=&zmy=&map_x=194&map_y=120#.X4Wi9S0iefA

Santa Ana winds are also bringing the dry air and high fire danger, through the entire week. This should be our last big heatwave for the season, but we do still have the rest of October and first half of November to worry about more Santa Ana winds.

Today: Hot everywhere, 90s and 100s for all.

Maybe a beach day, ocean temp at Hendry’s Beach is 68 degrees.
https://www.surf-forecast.com/breaks/Hendry-s-Beach-Arroyo-Burro/forecasts/latest/six_day

Wednesday: Hotter with records being broken everywhere, upper 90s coastal and valleys just super hot with 100 plus.

Thursday: Still super hot 🥵 but 1 or 2 degrees less.

Friday: Hot, but not as hot. Good day to have a flex day for Action roofing and the City off SB.

Saturday: Hot but slightly cooler.

Sunday still hot but we could actually see some 80s instead of 90s.

Next week, not a lot of changes, but some cooling. No rain in sight….

Stay cool, bring lots of water and drink it …..

Jack Martin

10/12/2020

Good Monday morning,

Well it is here, the heatwave will arrive today and last through the week: https://www.weather.gov/lox/

This will give us high fire danger, because of the dry conditions. The only good news is the winds will not be that bad .

Today the heat is really going to be felt to the north.

Solvang and SLO are going to be close to 100 degrees. Even normally chilly Pismo beach is going to hit 90.

https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-120.11929326318202&lat=34.61716100103759

For us, 80s and 90s with off shore winds and lots of sunshine.

Holly Moly look at us at 93 all week: https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-119.6985168624669&lat=34.420051776190974

The forecast for the rest of the week is easy. Hot with records that will be broken.

It still looks like the hottest day will be Wednesday, but there is no break between Tuesday through Friday.

Highs will be in the 90s to low 100s for all. It is going to be another Hot week.

The weekend looks to give us a slight cool down, but temps will be still above normal.

Bottom line, it will be a hot week.

Oh I almost forgot, happy Columbus day, who gets this day off ???

Congrats to the Lakers, Mark your friend was wrong 😊

Jack Martin

10/09/2020

Good Friday morning,

There is not a lot of change in the forecast since yesterday, so we can make this a easy one.

Today you can see the low pressure system spinning off shore:
https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES/conus_band.php?sat=G17&band=09&length=12

This system will spin down the coast and stay off the coast. Any showers will be in the coastal waters.

Temps today will be very much like Thursday. Highs in the low 70s in Santa Barbara and low 80s in the valleys.

Tonight there is a northwest wind likely from Western Goleta to Gaviota with A marine layer overnight into Saturday. This may create some morning drizzle.

Other than that, a gradual warm up will begin Sunday through mid week as high pressure builds in with off shore flow warming us up into the upper 80s along the coast and into the 90s in the valleys.

Overall it will be a nice weekend, with seasonable temps.

If your looking for weather excitement, fly to New Orleans where they will be feeling another hurricane.

The Gulf and Atlantic have been hammered with Hurricanes this year. https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES/conus_band.php?sat=G16&band=GEOCOLOR&length=12

In the Pacific there are still a few out there, but they are harmlessly moving to the west well away from land.

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/?epac

Have a great weekend, lakers can take the championship tonight.

They are wearing Kobe’s Momba Jerseys:

Jack Martin

10/08/2020

Good Thursday morning,

Cool air and fog is the forecast for the day. All valleys will see fog as the daylight arrives. Also, it will be a welcome to cooler days through Friday.

https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES/sector_band.php?sat=G17§or=wus&band=GEOCOLOR&length=12

Today we are looking at low 70s coastal and low 80s in the valleys with the marine layer at 2500 feet. Fog will be with us into the afternoon.

Low pressure is going to move down the coast Friday into Saturday. This will bring much cooler day time highs and slight chances of rain Santa Ynez and north.

Santa Barbara may see some drizzle Saturday morning. Otherwise temps will be in the 70s coastal and low 80s in the valleys.

Sunday we start to warm up as Santa Ana conditions build back in. Temps will rise slight Sunday.

The real impact will be Monday through Thursday where we will see highs back into the 80s coastal and 90s in the valleys.

Bottom line, break out the morning sweatshirts. You will need them the next few mornings.

Rain chances Saturday morning are possible in Santa Ynez north. For SB drizzle at best.

Enjoy!

Jack Martin

10/07/2020

Good Wednesday morning,

The cool down will continue through the end of the week for all, then a big warm up next week as Santa Ana winds redevelop.

Today the marine layer is creeping into the valleys. This will finally start to cool the Santa Ynez Valley will highs today in the lower 80s.

Here in Santa Barbara we will cool more, with highs around 75.

https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES/conus_band.php?sat=G17&band=09&length=12

High pressure is moving East and it will be replace with a low pressure system dropping down from the Pacific Northwest.

Thursday, we will see continued cooling for all.

Friday, the low pressure system drops south. This will begin to affect the weather Friday night into Saturday.

There is a slight of rain (20%) for north county. This really should not affect us, other then maybe some drizzle.

Temps will be cool Saturday with highs in the mid 60s to lower 70s.

Sunday high pressure builds in and we will begin to see an off shore event. Expect temps to climb into the 90s next week.

We are getting to that time of year where temps really begin to fluctuate as systems begin to start dropping further south.

Lakers made it closer then I thought, but prevailed: https://www.google.com/search?q=lakers+score+today&oq=lakers+score+&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0l7.8046j1j15&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Enjoy the day.

Jack Martin

10/06/2020

Good Tuesday morning,

It is really great for me to start each forecast with the date. It makes me think about what this date represents.

Today, Happy Birthday to my Daughter Christine 😀

The weather today will be very much like Monday. We are starting off with dampness along the coast with today’s highs slightly less in SB then Monday.

Highs around 78 degrees. Valleys will still be warm with upper 80s, but a little cooler.

Here is the sky view, high pressure is moving East:
https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES/conus_band.php?sat=G17&band=09&length=12

Wednesday the low clouds will creep their way toward the valleys and it will cool more there.

Thursday, cooler day for all. Highs mid 70s coastal and low 80s in the valleys.

Friday low pressure comes down from the north, this will bring a 20% chance of rain to Santa Ynez but that’s as far south as it goes.

Saturday will be another cooler day, with high pressure beginning to build back in.

Sunday, we will have the start of another off shore event with warming temps into next week.

Have a great day,

Go Lakers at 6 pm. My prediction Lakers by 10.

Jack Martin

10/05/2020

Good Monday Morning,

Today at my house we are starting out with dampness and drizzle. It is wet out there for some coastal locations. My camera even spotted a raccoon on my steps this morning.

https://ring.com/share/53a0cd54-30e9-451c-b990-bd91b5cc97d9

Today we find some low clouds and drizzle along the coast and high clouds from former hurricane Marie. This is really not going to do much to our weather, just a tropical look.

https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES/conus_band.php?sat=G17&band=09&length=12

Temps along the coast will drop, making it a cooler day in the low 80s, but inland will still be quite warm with temps still above normal in the low 90s.

As the week continues, everyone will begin a cool down, but temps will remain slightly above normal until Friday.

At that point, it looks like we might see the first day since Sept 11th with below normal temps.

The Friday into Saturday will bring a slight chance for rain on the central coast, but Santa Barbara will only see some drizzle.

Late next weekend it looks like high pressure will build back in and it will be warmer. Sunday should start another off shore event.

Looking towards Mexico, it looks like there are a few tropical depressions that are going to form at least 1 hurricane in the next 5 days.

It has been a light hurricane season in the west, but it is not over quite yet. We will watch and see where these move.

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/gtwo.php?basin=epac&fdays=5

Enjoy a start to cooler weather along the coast, valleys will be warm for a few more days.
