October 2018

Good Wednesday Morning

If you live in Ventura or Santa Ana wind areas, your alarm clock this morning will be the wind….

Yes as sunrise arrives, so does the wind for you. It is the start of another Santa Ana event.

Looks like warmer days for all with highs in the upper 80s through the weekend.

Winds will kick around Ventura area for the next few days, blowing 20 to 30 miles an hour.

For Santa Barbara, no wind, just warm temps… to end the month of October.

The 31st of October is Halloween night. Watch out for the young kids on your way home…

Weather for the little guys will be warm and great in SB. Ventura; you will need to battle a little wind tonight. It should not be too bad however.

As far as the November forecast, it will start off sunny and warm. No rain is in the forecast for at least the next week.

We will see what happens as the month progresses; however, we will likely see some rain in our near future.

For now….sunny and warm through the next 7 days. The only moisture will be in fog overnight.

Ok you’re up to date. Happy Halloween and clocks back on Sunday at 2 am.

New Week’s Weather

Sunrise

Good Monday morning,

The sunset last night was filled with Halloween colors. What a great view from Mother Nature. Yes, it is the last week in October, and Halloween is Wednesday night.

It will be a great week for all and the trick or treaters.

Today will be cooler with fog in the morning, clearing to sunshine.

Tonight a little sundowner wind action. In Gaviota for sure, we will see how far south the winds make it.

Tuesday, the warm up begins for the week. Ventura and Santa Ana wind areas will see wind. Not as bad as past events, but you will know it is out there.

Wednesday and especially Wednesday night, look for great weather for all the kids going door to door.

Thursday through at least Saturday, sunny and warm. Highs in the 80s. Saturday should be the warmest day…..

Ok now you’re ready, no rain in sight, but it is not to far away. November begins Thursday.

Saturday night or 2 am Sunday morning, we turn the clocks back. Night time will come sooner after work.

You get an extra hour of sleep, but now you have to get up earlier to see the day light.

Have a great week.

Good Thursday Morning

The week is flying by, as always.

We are going to have weak off shore flow build in for the weekend. This means warmer temps and less fog through Sunday.

Monday on shore flow returns with cooler temps.

All in all, still great weather for October. Looks like highs will be in the 80s starting Friday, with some wind in Santa Ana wind areas. These winds will be much lighter than the last round.

No rain in sight, but we are approaching November. So it will happen, just not for the next 7 days.

Here’s a view from the sky.

https://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

Have a great weekend and go Dodgers. They need a home stand; Boston was not good to them.

Monday Forecast

Good Monday morning,

I hope everyone will be getting this report on time, and my email is back on track.

The weather this week will be warm and summer like in Santa Barbara, however, Ventura and south will have lots of wind.

A Santa Ana event is starting right now. Winds in the mountains are already blowing at 50 miles an hour. Today will blow 40 to 60 miles an hour in the Santa Ana wind areas.

Tuesday through Thursday, the winds will calm and we will just have warm temps. Everyone will see 80s all week.

Friday into Saturday, it looks like one more Santa Ana wind event will happen.

The real interest for me is Mexico…I am heading to my daughter’s wedding on Wednesday. Take a look at the satellite, there is tropical storm Tara.

https://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

It does look like Tara will stay out of Cabo until at least the weekend, just in time for me to head home. The interesting part is there is still another system forming south of Tara. The letter Q is next and likely in the next 5 days.

https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/gtwo.php?basin=epac&fdays=5

Here is Tara’s, movement.

Ok, back home. Ventura get ready for the winds. It is already 72 degrees to start the day. Winds are going to arrive soon, if not now.

Have a great week.

Good Thursday Morning

I am sure everyone missed me, but I am back in business.

Not that I was not studying the weather, my G suite mail would not allow me to send out emails with larger groups.

Bottom line, I am back with cox mail and we should be good now…

All the weather action that was missed the last few days was in my forecast. I just could not let you know.

Today, we wake to fog and some pockets of drizzle. Weather spotter Lynn texted me early and said it was raining along the foothills at mission area. This will occur in pockets this morning. Clouds are 5,000 feet thick, so clearing today is not likely until later in the afternoon or not at all.

https://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

Friday, the low pressure system moves south and it sets up warmer weather. Temps will jump 10 to 20 degrees Friday, a weak off shore event occurs for 1 day.

Saturday, there is a slight chance of rain Ventura and south. Everyone will see puffy clouds building over the mountains. Some areas could even see some rain.

Sunday is transition day. We should have a nice day.

Monday through Wednesday, our first stronger Santa Ana event happens for the fall season. This will warm up Santa Barbara and create wind in Ventura and south, also bringing back fire danger where hills have not burned.

Ok, that’s it for today, lots of different weather occurrences in the next 6 days.

You’re prepared now, thank you cox mail…

This Week’s Weather

Good Monday morning,

It was crystal clear last night, bringing us a great view of the rocket launch at Vandenberg. If you did not see it, here are a few pictures from Adam. The rocket on the right of the 2nd picture returned to Vandenberg, and the other in a southern direction.

As for our weather, it is going to be a cooler week. Fall like weather ahead. We have 2 systems, one to the north and another to the south that we are watching.

Today we will see high clouds drift over us, this is doing nothing more than giving us a great sunset.

Tuesday and Wednesday, a low from the north drops south. This will not bring us rain, but fog, low clouds and drizzle is possible in LA.

Looking towards the end of the week, the jury is still out on how hurricane Sergio is going to affect the area. The one thing we do know is the surf will be up Tuesday to Thursday. Sergio is out in the pacific now, but is going to take a hard right turn and head toward central Baja.

It is predicted to make land fall in the same area as last week’s hurricane. That means Arizona and Phoenix might see another good soaking.

For us, one of the models is saying a closed low could suck up some moisture Friday. The other 2 say the rain will stay to the south. We will wait and see if anything develops from this.

Here is how it looks out there right now.

Enjoy your week.

Thursday Forecast

Good Thursday Morning,

With all the hype for the past week, we wound up getting just a little system.

Even with .41 of an inch. It was nice to see the rain. It has been close to 6 months.

Now the rain is over and the system has moved east. Days will turn back to typical fall weather.

https://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

Looks like we will have some north winds moving in Friday night. These will keep the fog away from Santa Barbara, but Ventura to LA will get caught up in a Catalina Eddie. This will create a marine layer, fog and maybe some drizzle. It does not appear this will affect Santa Barbara and north.

Weather will remain on the cooler side. With highs in the low 70s. Perfect fall weather.

The rain was a nice drill, and hopefully we will have many more days of rain this season.

I remember when I moved to California 37 years ago. Someone asked me where I lived before, and I told them Seattle, WA. They proceeded to tell me they like Seattle, because they can see the rain.

I told them it would take a long time before I ever missed the rain. It took me around 35 years to appreciate seeing the rain.

This was an early present to get rain on October 3rd.

Enjoy the clear skies and views after the rain.

Where is the Rain?

If you are up at 5 am I am sure you are saying, “Where is the rain?!!!.” ‘Well do not worry, the rain will be here shortly. It is currently raining in Lompoc.

Speaking of early risers, good morning Lynn.

If you look at the satellite picture, you can see the low just spinning off the coast. It has stalled and that is why the delay in the start of the rain.

Today, we will see light rain to start, with heavier rain this afternoon. They are now saying 1/4 to 1/2 inch.

Winds are out of the southeast 10 to 20 miles an hour.  This will increase the rainfall over SB, because of our south facing mountains.

Rain will turn to showers later in the afternoon. Then end tonight.

Also take a look at this satellite picture. There is lots of action in the pacific, with a hurricane near Hawaii and another south near the Baja.

Hurricane Walaka and Sergio

Crazy weather this year….

https://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

For the extended forecast, we have dry weather returning Thursday.

Then for the weekend an eddy will form over Catalina and bring the marine layer to 5,000 feet.

This will keep it quite cool and damp. All weekend.

Also news flash, Sharon just reported no power in Buellton. Not sure why, but some maybe late for work.

Ok have a nice wet day, it has been awhile since we have seen rain.

Good Tuesday Morning

Good morning,

The rain is now on track, and we know what will be happening.  Here is the low pressure system that will bring us our first rain.

https://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/weus/h5-loop-wv.html

As you can see in the satellite picture, the low is off the coast of northern California. This is spinning around and is moving east and south today.

The rain is going to hold off for us until the overnight hours, as the low moves closer to us. The rain will start out light with 1/10 to 2/10 of an inch only.

By late morning Wednesday, the core of the low will move over Santa Barbara, this will trigger the heavier rain.

The low is also tapping into some subtropical moisture to the south. Rain will turn to shower and will end Wednesday night.

The rain will move from north to south, starting in SLO and moving into Ventura, then LA later in the afternoon.

All in all we are now looking at around 1/2 inch coastal, and the mountains can see 1 inch or more on south facing mountains.

Winds will shift to the south east later today, as it always does when we get a low rotating counter clockwise. This is the reason the south facing mountains over Santa Barbara get more rain. This storm system will be an eye opener for us that the rainy season is coming.

Where the models reported a lot more rain Sunday morning, they have really pulled back on the totals.

To the south and east, you can see what is left of Rosa. It is hammering the Phoenix, AZ areas. They have received over 2 inches of rain. This, however, is not affecting our weather at all. It is the low to the north.

For the extended forecast, Thursday we will clear out and weather for the rest of the week and weekend will be uneventful. Just typical fall weather. This system will be a one-time rain. It looks like we will go back to a dry period after.

Ok that’s it for the day, cover the patio furniture today or tonight…

Enjoy the first rain of the season.

Good Monday Morning

Well here is the Monday forecast.

It looks like we will have a little more time to prepare for the storm as we talked about yesterday.

It does now look like the rain will hold off until Tuesday night. Overnight, we should only see light rain.

Wednesday will be the bigger rain. It looks like Wednesday afternoon will likely bring the heavier rain.

We are looking at .50 to 1 inch coastal, and 2 inches in the hills.

This is quite a bit less than the models talked about yesterday, but it is most likely much more realistic.

Rain will be heaviest Wednesday afternoon then should end overnight.

Thursday will bring us back to typical fall weather.

Here it is on the satellite picture. Our rain make is the system to the north.

Rosa to the south is really out of the picture. She is only affecting Arizona and New Mexico.

https://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

Today the weather will be warm and nice. We will likely see some clouds at times, but will not affect our weather much.

Enjoy the nice day, this gives us a little more time to remember that the rainy season is approaching.
