October 2015

10/28/15 Wind Wednesday

Well good hot morning,

Oh man, I woke this morning to 80 something degrees and winds at 15 miles an hour in my yard.

The big event today and Thursday is going to be the wind. There are going to be sundowner winds, Santa Anna’s and frontal passages that will create lots of wind the next 2 days.

If you live on the beach, well then you have some high tides and wave issues to deal with also.

First today there are some rain chances just to the north in SLO. If you look at the satellite you will see the first part of the front passing over us right now.

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/lox/scripts/animate.php?root=sat_16km&list=IR16.GIF.3.jpg,IR16.GIF.4.jpg,IR16.GIF.5.jpg,IR16.GIF.6.jpg,IR16.GIF.7.jpg,IR16.GIF.8.jpg

This will create wind today and tonight, and lots of it! It will be a crazy sundowner tonight. Winds will blow 45 plus miles an hour.

Tonight the back half of the front passes. This will create another round of wind Thursday and Thursday night.

That is the story for today. Keep the wind in mind…                                                     Wind emoji

More to come for Thursdays update

10/27/15 Today’s Rain Chances

Good Tuesday Morning,

Today we see the next system approaching the coast. This is rotated by a large low in the Gulf of Alaska, and fueled by former hurricane odle.

Rain is falling to the north from this, but the Gulf of Alaska low is too far north to do anything here.

There is still a chance of rain for us on Wednesday and Wednesday night, but there will not be a lot. What we will have is a really strong wind event after the front passes.

I expect a lot of wind Wednesday night as we might get a strong sundown.

(batten down that patio furniture if you are northwest exposed)

As For today, we will be dry. Tonight as the front gets closer we could see a few sprinkles and a damp overnight.

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/lox/scripts/animate.php?root=sat_16km&list=IR16.GIF.3.jpg,IR16.GIF.4.jpg,IR16.GIF.5.jpg,IR16.GIF.6.jpg,IR16.GIF.7.jpg,IR16.GIF.8.jpg

Thursday everything clears out. High pressure comes in and as Santa Anna event to the south of us starts. These winds will not affect us, only normal Santa Anna areas (Grapevine, Ventura, Oxnard, etc.).

The weekend and Halloween will warm up nicely. Trick or treaters should have a warm night for that on Saturday. Coastal areas are going to be in the upper 80s Saturday day time.

Ok that’s it for now. Off to the trenches

10/26/15 Monday Weather

Starting out the early Monday with Moon light.

Yes, looking like a full moon out there while pearl was having breakfast.

High tides today will bring the ocean water close a ways up our Sandy beaches.

As far as the rest of the weather.

We will have quite a mixed bag this week.  Today will be quite warm, especially in the valleys. High around 90. Here another nice day, around 80.

There is a low in the Gulf of Alaska that looks pretty impressive, coming our way .Tuesday night through Thursdays morning.

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/lox/scripts/animate.php?root=sat_16km&list=IR16.GIF.3.jpg,IR16.GIF.4.jpg,IR16.GIF.5.jpg,IR16.GIF.6.jpg,IR16.GIF.7.jpg,IR16.GIF.8.jpg

Models have struggled with this, flopped back and forth on the rain idea. Right now they have flopped back to the drier side, but we should see some sprinkles or showers Tuesday night through Thursday morning.

We will continue to watch this system.

All northern areas will see rain this week.

Looks like we might warm up again at the end of the week.

Great weather for Halloween.

Ok enjoy the week

Updates on rain chances Tuesday morning

10/21/15 Good Wednesday Morning

No real excitement in the forecast for this week.

Maybe some damp mornings along the coast at the end of the week.

Fall is in the air however. The inland valleys are really beginning to cool at night.

50s to start the work days for Santa Ynez Valley, and cooler nights. Time to break out the sweatshirts and light jackets.

For the coastal areas I do not think a jacket will be needed in SB. Friday into the weekend might bring some dampness because of the flow changing back onshore.

LA might even see drizzle from a coastal Edde that is developing, Thursday and Friday.

The extended forecast is also looking dry, though at least Tuesday of next week.

No real systems in the 7 day forecast.

We do not even attempt to guess, beyond 7 days.

Have a great day

Here is what it looks like from the Sky

One more thing, can someone tell the press to stop talking about El Nino. They are making my phone ring off the hook

10/19/15 Monday Morning Again

Yes here we go again, another work week.

This week the forecast is pretty clean, with warm weather returning, putting us back into the mid 80’s.

Today a weak low pressure system is going to drift over us. Not much effect on us, other than some winds tonight.

As Tuesday rolls in there should be a round of Santa Anna winds starting up.

This will warm up Santa Barbara.

Long term looks like mid 80s all week.

Tonight there might be a decent north east wind coming over Westmont and Brett’s house.

Check out the 2 hurricanes down in the lower Mexico area. The one to the east is a monster. Not affecting anything right now, but one of the biggest I have seen.

Another is forming closer to the coast in Mexico. These are way far out, but caught my interest.

Have a good week, we will check back in midweek, unless we get some excitement to report.

10/15/15 Good Thursday Morning

Good Thursday Morning,

How much fun was that last night?! Lightning, thunder and pouring rain.

That’s what make living here so much more fun, compared to rain in Seattle.

The subtropical low is still to the south of us off shore. It will move right over southern CA this afternoon. Heavy rain is occurring in the desserts right now, some light stuff in SY valley and SLO.

 http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/lox/scripts/animate.php?root=sat_4km&list=IR4.GIF.3.jpg,IR4.GIF.4.jpg,IR4.GIF.5.jpg,IR4.GIF.6.jpg,IR4.GIF.7.jpg,IR4.GIF.8.JPG

Rain chances will continue all day, just as we saw on Wednesday.  Today will remain a little cooler then yesterday. Still lots of humidity, but cooler temps.

The rain today will be again very spotty. Some areas will see more or less rain than others.

Today’s heat and unstable air mass, means thundershowers are possible any time today and this evening.

After today the low will move east and rain as well. Only some mountain clouds and maybe a few showers Friday. None for us…

Now the weekend..

Saturday and part of Sunday will be great, cooler and no humidity.

There was a chance of rain for later Sunday into Monday, with a system coming from the north. This now appears to be going inland and will not produce rain for us.

It will be much cooler and I expect some wind with the inside slider.

Next week is looking high and dry at this point. So we should be good for all outside activities… The best news is we will get a break from the heat.

This has been a crazy summer with weather. I heard one person call it global warming…  “Wrong” …. It is El Niño …..

The crazy is going to remain though the rainy season. Wait until the real rains arrive….. I am not looking forward to that……

                                  Have a great day.

See you at SBCA mixer at 4:30 pm tonight. I will keep the rain away. Then off to Jimmy Buffet tonight at the bowl.

That is going to be a fun show in this tropical weather. “bring you umbrella just in case”

10/14/15 Upcoming Rain

Ok, well it is looking like the low is now moving over us. This will spread rain into the area today. Rain chances are best in Santa Barbara, because of the southerly rotation of the system and our mountain range. The mountains will squeeze the rain out of the clouds. I do expect rain today, starting somewhere around lunch.

You will see mainly thunderstorms and build ups over the mountain, and then the rain will spread into the coastal areas. Rain totals, while still tough to call, Santa Barbara should see the most today. It’s looking like around 1/3 of an inch. Where the thunderstorms occur we will get up to an inch.

Water values are quite high, so where it does rain it will pour. Showers will be on and off today. Not constant rain.

The low will be right over us into and through Thursday. This will create more rain possibilities through Thursday, and then clear out on Friday.Dry Friday and Saturday.

Another weather system to the north will bring rain chances for Sunday.

We will not focus on Sunday’s system at this point, only today’s.

You can see this on the satellite below

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/lox/scripts/animate.php?root=sat_16km&list=IR16.GIF.3.jpg,IR16.GIF.4.jpg,IR16.GIF.5.jpg,IR16.GIF.6.jpg,IR16.GIF.7.jpg,IR16.GIF.8.jpg

The tropical low has kept us hot and muggy. Clouds will keep temps down some today, but humid weather continues.

Ok get out there and play it safe. For those who use umbrellas, bring it with you today and Thursday.

10/12/15 Monday Morning Forecast

By Jack Martin on Oct 12, 2015 at 08:09 AM

Good Monday Morning,

Well not great…. because I cannot figure out what the weather is going to do this week.

So here is the scoop.

The system that left us a week ago is coming back , for round 2. Here it is coming up out of the Baja

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/lox/scripts/animate.php?root=sat_16km&list=IR16.GIF.3.jpg,IR16.GIF.4.jpg,IR16.GIF.5.jpg,IR16.GIF.6.jpg,IR16.GIF.7.jpg,IR16.GIF.8.jpg

This is going to drift, ever so slowly to the north and northeast over the next 3 days.

All models are good with the track, but none know how much rain we can see. That’s a problem for me.

If you looked at the satellite picture Saturday you could barely see the system, then Sunday morning it was a monster of rain.

This is because it taped into the subtropical jet. This could or could not happen again. If you look this morning the low is pulling the subtropical jet with it.

So we are going to play it SAFE at Action Roofing.

There should not be any rain until Tuesday night at this point. We will see some high clouds start to roll in this afternoon, then some onshore flow over night; which could make it a little damp in the morning.

This could cool us down some on Tuesday. By Tuesday night the chances of rain will begin. How much is not clear. We will also have rain chances through Wednesday, possible all the way into Thursday.

Ok that’s it for now…..More by the morning.

Maybe we can work out the amount of rain by then?

10/5/15 Good Monday Morning

Good Monday Morning,

The rain is over for us, but falling to the south of us. Rain currently in LA and south and is spinning out there and dropping south.

Rain totals were actually fairly good for this time of year, with SB ( .41”)  Montecito hills (.67”) and Goleta around (.30”)

http://www.cnrfc.noaa.gov/precipMaps.php?group=sv&img=3

Now, it is out with the rain and back to lots of sunshine. Today in my eyes is going to be the best day of the week. The reason for this is it will be much cooler than it has been. Last night was easy sleeping with the cooler temps.

Unfortunately, each day of the week is going to warm up 3 to 5 degrees daily. Today we will be in the mid-70s, Tuesday around 80, then by the end of the week in the 90s.

Yes, a Santa Anna wind event will occur at the end of the week and blow up Ventura and areas south. For us just hot weather.

                    Hope everyone enjoyed the rain

Now it is back to the rat race

10/2/15 Upcoming Weather

Good Morning,

How about those sundowner winds last night! Winds have calmed for today, but will be back tonight.

Yes,one more round of sundowner winds tonight. If you felt wind last night, you will feel it again tonight.

Saturday looks to be a nice day, along with most of Sunday.

Sunday night the changes start.

Yes, rain is back in the forecast. This system is coming from the north and will be an inside slider.

Inside sliders generally bring us wind and colder weather; however with the subtropical jet to the south this will suck some moisture into the low. This will cause rain for us. Rain should not be heavy. 1/10 to 1/3 of an inch. South facing areas could see a little more. (Yes that means us)

Rain chances continue into Tuesday.

Then clearing and warmer temps will come back, as high pressure and off shore flow comes back.

One thing that will be nice is we will have a nice cool down on Monday and Tuesday.

                  Have a nice weekend…

Jack
