March 2016

3/31/16 Weekend Weather

Good Thursday morning,

Looks like a nice warming trend for the rest of the week into the weekend.

First check this out… El Niño has at least helped some of us…We drink their water here in Too.https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=10154256690620695&id=680935694

Today, warming up with high pressure building in.

Tonight, sundowner winds for Santa Barbara right around sunset. The winds will come up in Santa Barbara and warm us up into the mid-70s as the winds compress coming down the pass. Winds will not be crazy, but you will feel the wind if you face to the northwest.

Friday into the weekend is looking nice, maybe a little low clouds early on, but over all a really nice weekend.

Next week??? Well system drops into Northern California. This will do nothing more than cool us down some. A cut off low may form around Wednesday in the LA area.

If so there is at least a chance that we could pump in some sub-tropical moisture. Don’t hold your breath, but at least we can dream that the rainy season is not over yet.

Happy birthday Terri, have a great day!Cake

3/30/16 Wednesday Update

Good Wednesday morning,

The first half of the week has been cold and very windy. I think it is time to go back to some seasonable weather.

If you look at the satellite picture you will see the weather system that has created all the wind. This is over CA – NV boarder now, it will move out of the area today and we will bring back some warmer weather

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/lox/scripts/animate.php?root=sat_16km&list=IR16.GIF.3.jpg,IR16.GIF.4.jpg,IR16.GIF.5.jpg,IR16.GIF.6.jpg,IR16.GIF.7.jpg,IR16.GIF.8.jpg

Today will be warmer with less wind. “We are all ready for that break.”

Thursday, the warming will continue into the weekend. It is going to be seasonable, but not too warm.We will see coastal marine layer at times, but nothing past 11 am or noon.

Expect a nice weekend for all those late March and early April birthdays.

As for next week’s weather, well don’t think about it yes because 3 models bring 3 different solutions right now.

Have a great less windy days ahead….

3/28/16 Monday Weather Update

Sadly we will have another week of dry weather. Looks like any chances of rain will result at best with drizzle.

As you can see below there is the weather system diving down the coast. It does flow over land resulting in cooler weather, drizzle and dry.It will however be much cooler with temps being 8 to 12 degrees below normal.

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/lox/scripts/animate.php?root=sat_4km&list=IR4.GIF.3.jpg,IR4.GIF.4.jpg,IR4.GIF.5.jpg,IR4.GIF.6.jpg,IR4.GIF.7.jpg,IR4.GIF.8.jpg

This system will also bring us wind. Typical for spring in California, these systems always produce wind for us. Expect some good wind tonight coming from the northwest. 30 to 40 mph gusts later tonight. These will not affect the Montecito area like last week’s winds. It is more towards the pass, Goleta and Jack’s backyard. (No BBQ there tonight)

Tuesday thing calm and the rest of the week is just cooler and no real excitement.

Friday and Saturday will warm up some.

Sunday cools again.

No rain in site…. and it is April as of Friday.

Enjoy the week

3/21/16 Good Monday Morning

Well, no good news and only 2 more weeks of March left.

March started well and then the second 2 weeks in the middle have been a complete bust for Southern California.

This dry weather will continue all this week, with only one weak system ahead.

Sunday brought Santa Barbara a day of fog. That was different as clearing did not happen until late in the day.

There is a weak system that went through last night. There were a few sprinkles to the north, but nothing more than that.Tonight there will be one more weak system. This system will bring slightly more rain, if you consider 1/10th” of rain. Rain will be cut off in the Santa Ynez valley. We might have drizzle at best in Santa Barbara.

Following this system we will see wind from the northwest, and then dry all week. This weekend should be nice weather for Easter Sunday.

All in All, Next week is the last week March. We better hope for rain to end the month, like it started.

The rains in the beginning of the month have brought spring flowers in the mountains.Check out the picture my daughter sent from Figueroa Mountain yesterday. The poppies are in full bloom!

               Have a great week!

3/18/16 Weekend Weather

Good Friday morning,

Well the cool down has begun, fog has moved into the central coast and The Santa Ynez Valley. It will likely arrive in SB on Saturday.

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/lox/scripts/animate.php?root=sat_16km&list=IR16.GIF.3.jpg,IR16.GIF.4.jpg,IR16.GIF.5.jpg,IR16.GIF.6.jpg,IR16.GIF.7.jpg,IR16.GIF.8.jpg

The fog will bring no more than some dampness in the morning hours for the weekend, and then sunshine and cooler days.

Sunday night a weak system for us will create rain to all areas, point conception north. This means good rain in northern California “again” and little to none for us.

The unsettled pattern continues into next week, but they are not talking about much in the way of rain for us.

If any ….. That’s not looking good at this point. We are hoping the models have a change in heart for later next week. I want more rain!

Have a great weekend!

3/17/16 Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Good morning,

Happy St Patrick ’s Day and happy birthday to my wife.

Peggy Molloy born on St Patrick day. now that’s a Party day.

pot of gold

Weather wise, it does not get any better for this time of year. However this will be the last hot day.

High pressure will begin to move east tonight and the a low to the north will bring us an onshore flow. What this all means is no rain, cooler days and a little fog with onshore flow. All in all still a nice weekend and at least normal to slightly above normal temps.

Sunday night the energy will drop over the central coast. This will at least bring us a chance of showers.

Next week, the first part is looking dry, but in the extended Wednesday into Thursday looks like a system will affect our weather. Also looks like it might be an unsettled period with rain.

That’s good news. We want to hear.

In the meantime enjoy the great day!

3/16/16 Wednesday Update

By Jack Martin on Mar 16, 2016 at 03:24 PM

Good Wednesday morning,

Not much excitement out there, no real changes to report.

We will have sunny and very warm weather for the next 2 days, with Highs in the upper 70s low 80s.

Friday and Saturday will cool a little, but still be above normal in the low 70s.

Sunday night a weak system can bring possible light rain to the area, although not looking like much of anything.

Tuesday will bring some Northwest wind.

                              Enjoy the summer like weather.

3/15/16 Easy Forecast This Week

Ok, so no changes today, just a quick recap.

  • Tuesday/Wednesday – Warming trend with a little wind.
  • Thursday/Friday – Santa Anna wind and warming continue.
  • Saturday / Sunday – High pressure moves south with a low dropping down from the north.
  • Monday – A possibility of rain on at least the central coast. Way too far out at this point so we will only say “stay tuned”

Enjoy the Summer- Spring like week. It is going to be very nice first week of day light saving time.

3/14/16 Monday Morning Forecast

Interesting, take a look at these rain totals for the past 24 hours in SLO County

http://www.cnrfc.noaa.gov/images/countyPrecipMaps/sanluisobispo_24HRprecip.png

Compared to us in SB County

http://www.cnrfc.noaa.gov/images/countyPrecipMaps/santabarbara_24HRprecip.png

Yes, the flow has been just to the north of us. The central coast to the north to the Bay Area has had lots of weather with the Pineapple Express flow… For us… Zippo…. Except San Marcos pass and a little in the Santa Ynez Valley.

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/lox/scripts/animate.php?root=sat_16km&list=IR16.GIF.3.jpg,IR16.GIF.4.jpg,IR16.GIF.5.jpg,IR16.GIF.6.jpg,IR16.GIF.7.jpg,IR16.GIF.8.jpg

Today the front will continue to bring a slight chance of rain to the north, but we should not see anything more than a few mountain showers over our hills. After this afternoon, it all clears out for what is going to be a dry week through Sunday.

We will heat up into the 80s by mid-week with aa off shore Santa Anna event.

Friday there should be a shift with onshore flow from the ocean which will cool us a little, but no rain…

FYI there is a mess on the 101 north bound side with a big rig wreck. If you have to go north use the pass. Stay away from Gaviota and the 101 north.

Have a great week!

3/10/16 Rain is getting closer

Good Thursday morning,

All is on track now. Looks like rain will start Friday morning north to south.

This is another good rain maker that will start up in the Santa Ynez Valley between 9am -11 am Friday, and Santa Barbara 10 to noon. Then move south during the afternoon.

It’s looking like we will have another 3 to 5 hours of moderate to heavy rain, with good south flow, which will enhance the rain in Santa Barbara. Totals are still right on track.

1 to 1 1/2 inch for coastal SB.

2 inches or so in the mountains

1/2 to an inch everywhere else.

There is also a chance of thundershowers. This can bring some totals up in areas.

Saturday is looking dry and seasonable.

Sunday another good sized system moves into Northern California. This is going to bring them lots of rain, but may not bring us much.

What rain we get will be Sunday though Monday.

We will watch this as it gets closer. In the meantime . Enjoy a good rain starting Friday morning…

3/8/16 Rain Totals

Yes, it has been a great start to March. Also the good news is we still have another series of storms in the forecast. Before we go to there, let’s take a minute to look back.

Rain totals were nice; quite impressive in some areas from the 2 systems.

Montecito – 4.5 inches

Santa Barbara –  3.   Inches

San Marcos Pass – 5.5 inches

Santa Ynez – 3 inches

Those are some nice totals. Yesterday was quite different from the first storm on Saturday.

It seemed the rain came with a furry early Monday morning. I was awake at the 4 am hour when the sideways rain came. This was blowing hard from the northwest. Very unusual to see it rain that heavy and blow that harder from the northwest.

Montecito was the biggest winner from that rain, It had .88 inches by 7am and that was from sideways rain.

We all had a good half inch, but again it was a sideways rain. I have a 12 foot covered porch at my house housing electronics and flat screen on the wall which was getting soaked. I had to scramble to get it all covered. Good thing I am a roofing contractor and had everything in my truck!

The day brought a mix of sun, snow, cold air and wind, which made for a very interesting and eventful day.

Well it is all behind us now.

Today some wind. Not bad. Much cooler. High pressure takes back over on Wednesday and then warm up nicely for a few days.

Thursday, the best day of the week, Chambers of Commerce type of day. All visitors to Santa Barbara will love Thursday.

The next system arrives Friday. This is tough to predict timing at this point, so they are giving it a 24hr window to start. Forecasts are saying midnight Friday morning to mid night Saturday.

The system is now also looking stronger, with a good rain totals from 1 to 1 1/2 inches.

Then the extended is not telling us exactly what is going to happen, but it does look like we will have unsettled weather till Tuesday of next week.

So let’s hope to double last week’s rain

Now how about that for the start of March….Happy days have come again!

Bring on lots more rain.

Enjoy the next 3 days of sun and warmth sunny

3/7/16 Rain Update

Wow, that was fun…that rain woke me up last night!

Love it when the skies open up and the rain blows sideways. Well that’s today. The wind was blowing this morning from the northwest. This is very unusual for rain to come from this direction.

It is going to be a wild day of rain and wind. I do not think it would be a good idea to get lost in the mountains today.

This storm is going to be pretty dynamic. It will rain really hard at times, but there is not nearly as much moisture it the air. This will likely reduce the overall rain totals, but the run off will be fast and help fill the reservoirs or your yards or roofs.

Rain will turn to showers later this morning. There should be pretty heavy showers on and off after the main front goes through.

Snow, well that’s going to be around 4000 feet. Snow for sure in mountains. The grape vine is going to be a mess. High winds and snow. I would not be surprised that it would be closed for at least a few hours today.

You know what that means, grid lock on the 101.

Tonight the winds will be here. It should be pretty wild out there as the front passes. Northwest wind will make it crazy again.

Things calm on Tuesday morning, and then it looks like nice dry weather through Thursday.

The next rain looks like Friday night. It’s not looking like a huge storm, but we will see some rain. The models are flip flopping back and forth, but we are expecting a dry Saturday then another system Sunday.

Enough of the extended forecast…. today is where the ACTION is…        Rain emojiHave a fun day!

3/4/16 Rain Is Looking Good!!

Ok, we pretty much have things dialed in for a wet weekend. Good news, then more good news.

  1. Rain will be heavy both Saturday and Sunday night.
  2. Looks like our day time hours will be mostly dry, with most of the rain falling at night.
  3. Rain totals are looking good. We should see a total in SB area of 2 to 3 inches of rain, between the 2 systems. Mountain areas can see 4 inches or so.

Ok, so when is this all going to happen?yes

Changes are out there now. High clouds will be around all day. Tonight it does look like north areas will get rain overnight. This is going to be mainly in the SLO area down to Santa Ynez.

For us and south we should see maybe a few light showers and drizzle. Not much in rain if any.

Most of Saturday will be dry, and then Saturday night into early Sunday morning the rain arrives. This will be heavy at times. We also will have good south flow which will enhance the rain on the south facing mountains in SB.

We should see 1 to 2 inches of rain. Rain will taper overnight then we will dry out for Sunday morning.

Most of Sunday will be dry, and then the next system arrives Sunday night into Monday.

This one is a colder and more dynamic. This will have heavy rain with some embedded thunder showers. Rain will be heavy at rates of 1/2in per hour where thunderstorms arrive. Showers will continue into our Monday morning. Looks like this system will bring more scattered totals, but we could see the same results as Saturday night.

Showers end late Monday, but pretty much over by noon.

Monday night, wind….  And lots of it from the northwest, so it will rock Jack’s backyard!

Wind emoji

Things dry out Tuesday through Thursday with high pressure building back in.

Beyond that, were not talking yet. Hoping for more late next week.

Ok have fun… This is what we have been hoping for!

3/3/16 Thursday Forecast Update

Good Thursday morning,

Well, another week coming to a close.

Today, we will see the start to see some changes in our weather pattern. You will notice lots of high clouds out there; this is thanks to a weak cold front that is pushing over us. Models had suggested rain chances overnight tonight into Friday, but now it looks like at best fog and drizzle.

Rain chances are slightly better in Santa Ynez and to the north, but again only sprinkles and possible drizzle. This is the same for Friday night into Saturday. We will have a better chance to see some precipitation .

The real rain event will begin Saturday evening into Sunday. This first system will bring 3 to 5 hours of moderate to heavy rain. Saturday’s system will be warmer with higher snow levels.

Sunday will be wet, but might be mostly rain free until the evening. Then over night the next system will affect us. This will be a much colder system. Snow levels will drop to the 4000 to 5000 foot range.

Rain will start Sunday night, with another round of heavy rain for a 3 to 5 hour period. Rain will likely affect us Monday morning and clearing by noon.

It’s looking like we will see dry weather Tuesday and Wednesday, and then more rain possibly later in the week.

Ok that’s the good news for all… Looks like we will see lots of rain this weekend, but if it all works out the day time hours might be fairly dry, with the rain falling in the darker hours…

Have a great day!

3/2/16 Good Wednesday Morning

We have a few days of just cooler weather, and then the rain will start to arrive. The good news is the systems are looking to start earlier and drop more rain. So here is the latest.

Today: The cooling begins as the high moves east

Thursday: The mid-level clouds start to roll in

Thursday night: Rain develops to the north after midnight. It will likely effect Santa Ynez and to the north

Friday: Rain should begin to affect our area sometime in the afternoon.

Friday night into Saturday: We should see some good rain.

Saturday later in the afternoon: Another round of heavier rain

Sunday night into Monday: Yet another impulse will give us rain

Things begin to dry out Tuesday morning…

Nothing in the forecast beyond that, but we should be looking at least 1 to 2 inches this weekend…

That’s a good start. Let’s keep it coming……

http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-119.70918427734374&lat=34.43248514943117#.Vtb0C_A76rU

Ok let it rain!

3/1/16 Excitement in the air….

You can’t see it through the Fog, but we are beginning to feel the changes that March is going to bring us.

Congrats, we survived one of the driest Februarys ever, and it is now March 1st.

The first day of March is looking like it should this time of year.

Along the coastal areas we are seeing a dense fog, Inland not so much.

Fog along the coast will keep the temps down and then will clear to sunshine later this morning.

It will be wet on those roofs first thing this morning thanks to the low marine later. The inland area will still be seeing a heat wave, with temps a good 15 degrees above normal. Expect highs for valleys in the 80s today.

Coastal areas might not break the 60s.

Wednesday the cooling trend starts, also the zonal flow will begin to drop. This will bring the chances of rain back for Thursday and Thursday night.

The Santa Ynez Valley to the north might see a little rain with this first system, but SB south is only looking damp with fog, possible some drizzle.

The weekend is looking good for widespread rain for all. Rain total are not out yet, but looking like the first system can bring 1/2 to 1 inch.

That’s not the good news however, It looks like next week we can see rain on and off most of the week, with a series of systems.

Some are talking about 3 plus inches. Still a little premature to be talking about that, but it is a good sign for our March miracle.

Have a great day, drive safely. The fog is pretty thick….
