Good Wednesday morning,
Last day of January, and the last dry day for a while.
Are you ready for some extremely wet weather? Ready or not here it comes.
Today, nothing exciting until late in the day and then it quickly changes with the first system showing up tonight and overnight.
This is a good system with some subtropical moisture to support it, but the longevity of the storm will only be 6 to 8 hours.
https://zoom.earth/
Rain will start up overnight and rain into the afternoon Thursday.
Rainfall will be 1 to 2 inches coastal, 2 to 4 inches in the mountains, and 5 inches or so on south faces. This will also be a windy storm with South winds coming up this afternoon in the hills, blowing 30 to 40 miles an hour.
Thursday afternoon turns to showers and we actually have a chance of showers through Friday.
Friday and Saturday, a weak ridge set up will still give us some light showers but the most part dry and cold.
Sunday, the next storm comes to play. This is going to be the strongest storm of the season, we could see 2 to 3 days of steady rain. We’re looking at 2 to 4 inches along the coast, and 4 to 8 inches in the hills. Yes, this one will be a doozy.
Exact timing and longevity is still to be decided, but it will have good subtropical, tap and the low will spin pumping in the moisture for a number of days.
This will be the biggest storm of the 2024 equaling the late December storm.
Sounds like it might be a busy day for me today. Enjoy the last day of dryness because it’s gonna be wet for the next week.

Good Tuesday morning,
The party is almost over and the great weather will come to an end. I hope everyone enjoyed the tropical vacation in Santa Barbara.
Today will be the last day with 70s as highs, before our weather takes a turn for the worst. As you can see high clouds will start in as high pressure has moved East.
https://zoom.earth/maps/satellite/#view=33.8,-119.4,4z
Today will be a nice warm day, with highs in the lower 70s. Still 5 plus degrees above normal for this time of year.
Wednesday the Pacific Northwest low moves towards us. Rain will start up Wednesday night in SLO then move south arriving in LA right at rush hour in the morning. This will result in a messy drive in LA traffic.
Expect a mild atmospheric river, which means we will see only 4 to 8 hours of moderate to heavy rain. Expect 1 to 3 inches along SB. 3 to 5 inches in the mountains from just the first system. Highs only in the 60s snow level 6000 feet.
Thursday the snow levels drop to 4000 feet and some grapevine snow is possible.
We stay in northwest flow with some showers possible through Friday.
Saturday looks like a transition day before another system Sunday into Tuesday.
Yes, this one looks to be a good one with 24 to 48 hours of moderate rain. Intensity and the duration of this second system is still in question, but it might be a good one.
Bottom line, the party is over for now, get ready for a bunch of rain.
Have a great day, it will be the last nice day for awhile.

Good Monday morning,
No I was not sleeping in… It’s just been a busy morning, but my weather groups are never to be forgotten.
Today the continued summer weather will be upon us with upper 70s to 80 degrees.
Tuesday more of the same, but high pressure begins to move east.
Wednesday the first system to bring us rain will begin to move in. rain Wednesday night in SLO, then drop to us early Thursday morning.
Thursday will be a wet day; we are looking at a good system with lots of moisture to mix with the low-pressure system. This will bring us rain into Friday.
We are looking at 1 to 2.5 coastal, 2 to 4 inches in the mountains and 5 or more on south faces. (Yep, a good rain) with rates per hour from 1/3 to ¾ inch at times.
Looks like drier Saturday before rain moves in again Sunday.
Looking into the long-range models we will see rain into mid-February.
Enjoy the great weather the next 2 days, then winter returns. Snow levels will start out at 6000 to 6500 feet and drop to 3000 on Friday. This is a colder storm.

Good Friday morning,
The weekend is almost here and it is going to be a really nice warm one https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-119.6897277496755&lat=34.42976536745786
Highs today 71 in Santa Barbara, 75 Saturday and warmer Sunday. Just great weather for the weekend.
Monday and Tuesday high pressure continues and warmer temps. Tuesday the ridge breaks down.
Wednesday low pressure rolls towards us with chances of rain stating in the afternoon.
Wednesday night and Thursday rain is expected moderate to heavy at times, but still too far out to have a good handle on this.
This weekend high surf and the Rincon classic. The weather will be as good as it gets for this surf competition.
Enjoy the weekend regardless of what you’re doing, it will be a great weekend to get outside and call family around the country where it is bitter cold.

Good Thursday morning,
A Weak low pressure system passed through yesterday with some light rain north and light drizzle here.
This morning, fog is out there, but by this afternoon, high pressure and off shore flow builds.
Zoom Earth | Live Weather Map & Hurricane Tracker
https://zoom.earth/maps/satellite/#view=50.7,-136.9,4.18z
Friday, warming weather and above normal temps through the entire weekend.
Saturday and Sunday you are going to love the forecast. High pressure and off shore flow will spell the warmest weather of 2024. Temps will be 10 to 15 degrees above normal. Highs for all will be in the 70s and some valley areas into the 80s.
Next week the nice weather continues into Tuesday then it changes on Wednesday.
Wednesday the storm door opens again with a series of systems giving us rain on and off into the second week of February. It looks like an atmospheric river is possible.
Meaning the subtropical moisture is like a river in the air. Combined with cold air, it drops lots of rain.
Now this is still in the long range models and you really can not trust long range models, but it is something to watch over the next 2 weeks.
Bottom line, it will be a fantastic weekend, with warm temps through the weekend.
Beyond, stay tuned. It is just the start of February, later next week. the wettest time of year is upon us.
Enjoy the great weather starting Friday and better Saturday and Sunday!
As far as lake levels, all lakes are full except for Cachuma at 91%. Nacimento is 61% San Antonio 65%. Needless to say all these numbers are pretty good for this time of year.
High surf this weekend for surfers
Enjoy,
Jack Martin
1/23/24
Good Tuesday morning,
The rain is over, but it was a success with total of 2 to 3 inches in the Santa Barbara area over the period Friday through Monday.
The big winner was Rocky Butte in SLO with 8.86 inches, locally San Marcos pass and Refugio pass both had over 3 inches.
https://www.weather.gov/lox/LAXRRMSBA
So what’s up next? Well. the wind of course. Between the rain and the wind, it should be crystal clear out there today. You also need to check out the full moon.
Today we will see warming begin with temps a few degrees warmer.
Wednesday a weak low-pressure system will bring rain to SLO and northern Santa Barbara county ¼ inch or less. None here in southern Santa Barbara county.
Thursday, we start a nice warm up with offshore winds.
Friday through Monday it will be great weather for January with 70s and lots of sunshine.
Next week, it looks like the storm track returns Wednesday or Thursday, so enjoy the great weather, but don’t get to use to it.
We are getting into the shortest month of the year, but the wettest for southern California.
Enjoy the views today, the island should be picture perfect.

Good Monday morning,
The wet weekend continues today with the heaviest rain. The only good part about a rainy weekend is there was really no rain during the day.
Certainly not beach weather, but at least it was dry for the most part. Today the strongest and wettest system rolls through. https://zoom.earth
The new work week is here, but in the construction industry many jobs will take a pause today.
Today the rain was falling pretty heavy from 2 to 4 am in SB. The heavier rain is now in Ventura and heading south to LA just in time for the commute this morning.
https://radar.weather.gov/station/KVTX/standard
Today it looks like rain through around noon for our area, and heavy at times. This afternoon rain will turn to showers.
Tonight there is a 20% to 40% chance of thunderstorms and heavy rain. Models are still trying to figure that part out, so we will focus on today.
The Santa Barbara area will see the greatest rainfall numbers today because of the south flow and subtropical jet. South winds of 25 miles an hour is likely at times, causing enhanced rain squeezing all rain out of the sky due to the south facing mountains.
After tonight we dry out here in SB and south. SLO will still see a little more rain on Wednesday as a weak system passes through. For us dry weather the rest of the week.
Plus a warming trend with 4 to 8 degrees above normal for next weekend. Maybe you can break out the suntan lotion 😊.
Looking into the crystal ball it looks like the wet pattern returns the first of February, nine days away.
Enjoy the day off if you are in the construction industry (not me). This will be one of those Mondays that weekend warriors do not need to call in sick (again not me)
Have a great day and stay dry.
Did you see the Chief’s game yesterday? Great game especially if you like the chiefs. Talyor swift was there, but Jason Kelce stole the show with shirt off and downing a beer.
If you have not seen the Kelsey documentary on amazon prime called KELCE you need to watch it. It was great.
A true Phila man and fan, being from Phila many moons ago it was hilarious.
Ok that’s the excitement for the day.

Good Sunday morning,
Rain last night came down pretty good and the rain totals are now starting to add up, and we are just beginning to get into the wet period. The Santa Barbara area has received the most rain so far with everyone approaching 1 inch.
https://www.weather.gov/lox/LAXRRMSBA
Today we will see rain again as the next wave moves in today, tonight and Monday.
This will be the heaviest rain with rates tonight and Monday at 1/2 to 3/4 an inch per hour. Everyone will receive another 1 to 2 inches and 2 to 4 in the mountains.
Rain will end Monday night and we will dry out the rest of the week.
Enjoy the rain, and I am sure lots will be watching football 🏈
Jack Martin
1/20/24
Good Saturday morning,
Looks like lull in the rain for the rest of today. Everyone has received around a half an inch coastal the hills 3/4 of an inch Santa Ynez and Lake Cachuma less than a quarter so far
https://www.weather.gov/lox/LAXRRMSBA
Today some light rain and drizzle but accumulation of no more than 1/10 to a quarter of an inch.
Tonight we’ll get another round of rain. Rain will pick up tonight overnight then on Sunday we’ll see another lull before heavier rain comes in again on Sunday night and Monday.
All in all, everything is on track for 1 to 3 inches along the coast 2 to 5 inches in the mountains during the period of Friday night through Monday night
This is not a huge storm, but will make a decent impact on the area.
Tuesday through the end of the week looks to be dry.
Enjoy the indoor activities this weekend probably watching football or if you’re not into football then movies iy is!
Have a nice weekend. Talk to you soon.

Good Friday morning,
It is funny, I am watching the news in the background, and it is crazy cold and snowy around the country. I am glad I do not live there.
For us it is the Last day of the work week will be a busy day at Action. As everyone is aware by now, we have rain on the way.
Today, lots of clouds, but no rain until tonight. The low-pressure system is 650 miles west of San Francisco right now https://zoom.earth/
This will move over us throughout the day and rain will begin on the central coast late in the afternoon and arrive north to south late tonight into Saturday.
Rain will really come in a few waves, but for the most part we will see good rainfall totals through Monday.
Tonight through Sunday evening it will rain, but on and off. All in all over the 2-day period Friday night to Sunday evening .75 to 1.5 inches is expected coastal.
Less in LA, more on south facing mountains where 2 to 4 are possible.
Sunday night the second wave will arrive. This will start Sunday night and last through Monday night and will bring another .75 to 2 inches of rain.
All in all, over the entire storm system through Monday night we can see 1 to 2 inches coastal. 2 to 4 inches in the foothills and 4 to 6 inches in SLO and south facing mountains.
South flow will give higher rain totals to the Santa Barbara area. We will see how much falls, but 2 plus inches is likely.
Snow levels will remain around 6500 feet and snow accumulation of 8 to 16 inches. After that clearing Tuesday through the rest of the week.
Enjoy the first wet weekend of 2024.

Good Thursday morning,
As always another week flying by. It’s crazy to think back when I was young. Days seemed to last forever and those car rides were a lifetime, even if it was 2 hours in time🤔.
Today we are looking at a nice day with lows only in the 40s with some low 50s to start the day. Highs will range from the lower 60s to upper 60s.
This is thanks to high pressure allowing all clouds to rise up and over us.
Friday the ridge moves east and the first low pressure system approaches with rain.
This will arrive Friday afternoon with high clouds, but rain will not start until Friday night.
Friday night into Saturday we will see rain, but lighter. Rain will be on and off with only 1/4 to 1/2 inch through the period.
Saturday night and Sunday Day will be cloudy, but dry for the most part.
Sunday night and most of Monday is when the stronger system arrives. This will be a good rain maker, but snow levels will remain at around 7000 feet. Resorts will see snow, but none locally. Rain will be 1 to 2 inches coastal 2 to 4 in the mountains with south facing mountains getting the most because of the counterclockwise rotation and subtropical moisture. Rain rates should stay under 1/2 inch per hour, so downtown flooding is not a factor.
Enjoy the fun, it is the rainy season. The good news is Tuesday through the rest of next week will be dry again. I love California weather. When it rains it really does. I will take this over Seattle drizzle 250 days a year, or at least it seems like that.
Jack Martin
1/16/24
Good Tuesday morning,
This will be a quick update.
Today warm temps and some high clouds floating over us as a low-pressure system approaches from the north. https://zoom.earth/
Tonight and Wednesday some lighter rain in SLO and northern Santa Barbara county. Lompoc and possibly Santa Ynez, but 1/10th or less
Thursday and Friday a ridge builds in. Warm temps in the 60s
Saturday through Monday rain for all. This is a warmer system so snow level 6000 feet. Rain will come in 2 or 3 different periods through the weekend.
Next Tuesday a ridge builds in.
The preliminary rainfall forecast is for Friday through Monday. Timeframe (subject to frequent revision) call for 1 to 2 inches, with 2 to 4 inches across the southwest facing slopes and 5+ inches over NW SLO county.
Jack Martin
1/15/24
Good Monday morning,
I thought I would start off the week with lake levels and rain totals and percentages for the season and year. As you know we have basically had little to no rain for the last few weeks and this is the heart of our rainy season. Even with the lack of recent rains we are still around normal because of the big storm before Christmas.
Here are the numbers:
Gibralter Reservoir: 96.4%
Cachuma Reservoir: 90.6%
Jameson Reservoir: 100.3%
Now for our forecast. this week is starting out warmer with lows today in the 40s and highs in the upper 60s. This is quite nice for this time of year and the good weather will continue through Friday. Wednesday a weak storm passes but nothing to note.
Dry through Friday.
Friday night through the weekend the storm door opens. We will see 3 days of rain chances and likely 1/2 to 1 inch and 2 inches on south facing mountains.
These are early numbers, but time will tell, as we get into the week.
Basically the party is ending and we will resume the typical wet pattern that we find in January and February each year. This does not mean rain every day, but generally we get a week or so of rain then a break for a week. This will likely be the case all the way through February and into March.
We are in an El Niño year…Enjoy the dry weather this week, it will be a wet weekend
Jack Martin
1/14/24
Good Sunday morning,
Winter is crazy right now around the country, while it seems cold here, that is not the case. Just watching football yesterday showed you how cold it was elsewhere. The chiefs game started at 0 degrees and ended with negative 8 and wind chill of 38 below. Now that is freezing cold.
For us spoiled and over taxed folks in Southern California, 30s for a low and mid 60s for highs looks pretty sweet compared to the rest of the country.
This next work week’s weather is looking just fine. Lots of sun, no rain, cold mornings, warm days in the sun and some wind at times through Friday.
Now we will talk about the change. It does look like we will be getting into a wet pattern starting as soon as next Saturday. We will get back into a wet pattern for likely at least a week. Our Rainy seasons seem to roll with very wet weather for a few weeks followed by dry for another week or so. Starting next Saturday it looks like a wet rainy pattern will develop. We are in the 2 wettest months in our season for rain. January and February are typically very wet.
We are in El Niño if you have forgotten due to the dry weather. This season is still on track to be as wet or wetter than last season.
Get anything wrapped up that requires dryness because the wet weather is going to return quickly.
Enjoy 6 More days of dry, next weekend will change.
Have a great Sunday
Jack Martin
1/13/24
Good Saturday morning,
A great weekend ahead with nice winter weather, highs in the low 60s and lows at night in the 30s to low 40s.
Tonight a weak system passes through and brings light rain to SLO, 1/10th of an inch. Here nothing, only some wind.
Sunday a nice day with warming 2 to 3 degrees. https://zoom.earth/
Next week not a lot of excitement, another weak low passes Wednesday, but looks to affect only SLO, here dry all week.
This pattern continues through Friday at least, but the extended forecast is looking like rain will return starting the week of the 19 of January.
These are the words of the national weather service.
The mostly dry pattern will likely persist through next Friday. We may enter a wetter pattern as early as next weekend with the Climate Prediction Center indicating a 40-50 percent chance of above normal rainfall in the 6-10 day period (Jan 18-22).
Enjoy one more week of dry weather the pattern will be changing likely next weekend.
Jack Martin
1/12/24
Ok now it is really Friday,
It is a chilly start to our morning 30 degrees in Santa Ynez and low 40s in SB.
Today will be a cold start, but plenty of warming with the sunshine. Today will be warmer than yesterday, highs in the lower 60s.
As The weekend is approaching Saturday will be similar to today chilly night and low 60s during the day. https://zoom.earth/maps/satellite/
Saturday night, a weak low pressure system approaches and the affects will only be felt on the central coast. Here, no rain, just cool and some wind.
It looks like Sunday we will see some Santa Ana winds and warming day time temps.
Looking into next week we will see continued dry weather through Wednesday and at this point likely the rest of the week.
If you look at the graphic, you can see all the atmospheric moisture is remaining to the north. Keeping us dry and our friend in the north quite wet with lots of rain and snow.
The AR will sag south at some point likely the week of 22nd and we will return to winter rainy season. Stay tuned and have a great weekend
For those that follow lake levels we are sitting pretty good for the first half of January, even with little rainfall https://files.countyofsb.org/pwd/hydrology/Rainfall%20Reports/rainfallreport.pdf

Good Friday morning,
Wind and more wind through the day. You can see the clouds on Zoom Earth, which indicates lots of wind.
https://zoom.earth/maps/satellite/#view=31.6,-110.8,4z
Today the low passes through and the wind continues. North winds through the day and light snow on north-facing mountains. No rain for us just chilly and windy.
Making the forecast easy, this trend will continue through next Wednesday. Periods of wind, cold temps, and some warming in between. No rain for the next week.
Have a great day and enjoy the dry cold winter weather. It will change I promise.
Jack Martin
1/10/24
Good Wednesday morning,
Crazy that 1 year ago yesterday we had the wild storm with flooding everywhere. It was a far cry from last year. The current weather is all about sunshine, cold and winds as another dry and cold low drops into the interior of California.
https://zoom.earth/
This will bring lots of wind and some light snow on north mountains. Mountains should expect 45 to 55 mile an hour winds tonight with 80 mile an hour gusts. It will be quite cold and wild winds. Not a good place to be.
It looks like our dry weather will continue through the next week, with a few more inside sliders that will really keep us cold, windy and sunny.
This is great news for my sewer project at my house in Santa Ynez, but bottom line this will change and we will get back to El Niño.
It is still early in our rainy season and I do expect wild rains to return before the end of January.
In the mean time, dress warm and be ready for wind. Winds will be felt everywhere tonight and Saturday night.
It sure is pretty and clear out there.
Jack Martin
1/8/24
A week into the new year, I think I am finally getting it down to write a 24 after the date.
It is cold out there. 36 in Santa Ynez and 49 here, and it is only getting colder this week. Just look at the lows in the 20s in the valley. Highs will be in the upper 50s to 60 degrees
https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-120.03501176834101&lat=34.61117088969736
Looking at the forecast the next 7 days there is just not a lot happening. Sunny, cold days and nights most of the week with below normal temps.
Rain chances are low and if we do see any rain through the week it will be very light.
Rain chances start Wednesday night, with a weak system just like Saturday’s. An inside slider. Saturday nights system we saw lot of wind, but only .001 to .003 of rain.
This will be another result of the same with Wednesday night system. After that our next shot of rain will be Saturday into Sunday, however there is no agreement on the long range models. The only agreement is it will be on the lighter side if we do see rain.
Bottom line, cold and dry is pretty much what to expect this week. Frost on roofs is likely in the valleys and some foothills. Be careful on those roofs 😂 leave it to the pros.
Have a great week, don’t forget the game tonight Huskies Vs Michigan should be a good one. As I check off my boxes of teams, between the 2, I will root for the huskies… And what was the pac 12.
Have a great week, bring a jacket and maybe gloves
Jack Martin
1/5/24
The first weekend in 2024 is approaching.
Today we start out with cooler weather and some high clouds over head. No real excitement to report other the minor winds.
https://zoom.earth/maps/satellite/#view=35.9,-107,4z
Saturday an inside slider will drop south. This is a very weak system that should not result in any rain, but it will become quite windy, especially in the mountains. Expect north and northwest winds with gusts in the mountains of 60 to 70 miles an hour. Less Breezy at lower elevations but still windy.
Where wind is not a factor, cold will there will be some areas with freezing temps
Once that system blow though Sunday we are off to good weather through at least Wednesday. High pressure and some off shore winds will warm us up to the low to mid 60s.
Wednesday night into Thursday another weak system that will bring little rain, if any.
It is looking like next week will remain dry for the most part.
Beyond that models are struggling with long range forecast. At this point it looks like we could get back into a wet pattern the middle of January.
Have a great Friday and enjoy your weekend.
Jack Martin
1/3/24
Good Wednesday morning,
Over night we had rain. We received anywhere from 1/3 to 2/3 of an inch.
Not a huge rain maker, but today will be about the cold air, wind and showers.
Satellite shows the front has moved into LA but the cold air is just arriving. If you look at the little dots out in the pacific that’s the cold air and showers.
https://zoom.earth/
Not a lot more rain today, but some showers are likely. These will be in the form of snow above 4500 feet and showers below. These clouds will not hold much moisture because of the cold air. Expect shower chances through 10pm tonight.
Thursday and Friday will be dry and colder. Highs will barely make 60.
Saturday the next system moves in Saturday night. This is looking like it will be further inland so rainfall will likely be light if any, but don’t bet the house at this point, just stay tuned.
Enjoy the winter day and high surf. Thursday morning it will appear you can reach out and touch the islands because of the crystal clear skies from this wind and rain affect.

1/2/24
Good Tuesday morning 2024,
This week winter arrives with the coldest storms of the the season. We will see a 1-2 punch tonight and Saturday night
https://zoom.earth/maps/satellite/#view=31.3,-164,4z/date=2024-01-02,01:30,-8
This week will be a chilly one with highs along the coast only 60 degrees on Wednesday and snow levels at 4500 feet.
Today we will see sunshine with some high clouds mixed in and highs in the lower 60s.
Tonight the cold storm system moves in. Rain and snow 5000 feet and above. Some snow will fall on the grape vine. Rain should be on the lighter side with 1/2 to 3/4 locally and SLO county could see an inch.
This is a cold system and not a lot of moisture to work with. Rain will start over night tonight and Wednesday. It will be all over by Thursday.
Looks like Thursday through Saturday day will be dry, before the next system moves in with additional rain late Saturday night into Sunday.
This one will also be moisture starved and take a more inland track.
Expect 1/0 to 1/4 out of Sunday system.
Next week it looks like a ridge will build in and keep storms away for most of next week.
Happy 2024, let’s get out there and do it another year!
Jack Martin
1/1/24
Happy new year!
I hope everyone is having a great new years morning.
The start of 2024 will bring us 2 days of sunshine, but chilly weather.
The low pressure system that drifted by us yesterday is near San Diego and really did nothing but bring us cloudy skies and cooler temps.
https://zoom.earth/maps/satellite/#view=26,-114.7,4.7z/date=2024-01-01,03:00,-8
Today and Tuesday we will be sunny and cool with highs in the low 60s.
Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning we are looking at another rain event. Colder air the snow level will drop to 4500 feet and bring snow to the resorts.
There is not a lot of moisture with this next system, so it will be a 1 day event with 1/2 to 1 1/2 inch of rain.
Thursday the rain clears out and we will likely see dry chilly weather into Saturday.
Then Saturday night into Sunday another shot of rain. This one is even weaker then Wednesday’s system and is looking to take a more inland track, which will make it moisture starved. Expect another 1/2 inch at this point.
Enjoy your New Year’s Day, sunny and clear out there right now.
High today around 63 degrees
Jack Martin
