January 2018

1/31/18 Wednesday Update

Good morning,

Just 70’s and nice weather, not much to say other than that.

If you missed the eclipse and blue moon, here is a 3 hour time lapse.

https://www.space.com/39208-super-blue-blood-moon-guide.html

It was so bright at 2:30 am when I was up and outside.

Enjoy another week and day in the month of January in the 70’s.

1/30/18 Tuesday Weather

Good morning,

This will be a fast, easy one. Just great weather with no excitement….

1. Ventura and points south will be happy to hear that the wind event you have had for the past few days is over. You will be warm, with highs in the upper 70’s. Calm winds.

2. Santa Barbara and points north, just a nice day in the mid 70’s.

You want excitement!!!

This might be on your bucket list:

The Super Blue Blood moon tonight…..go to bed early and get up to watch this at 5:30 am. This is the first Super Blue Blood moon since 1886.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/dont-miss-the-first-super-blue-blood-moon-since-1866/ar-BBIo6wx?ocid=se

Ok, that’s it for today. No rain for at least a week, temps will be in the 70’s during the day all week long….

Have a great day!!!!

Good Monday Morning

Wow,

How about that Sunday weather? So fantastic. I sat outside on the deck until 9pm watching the Grammies. Yesterday hit 82° in SB and it was a 10 out of 10 for a perfect day.

Today is going to be a repeat of yesterday. Highs again in SB in the low 80’s.

If you live in Ventura or south, you will have a hotter day, but the spoiler will be the wind again. You will have one more day of the crazy winds.

Tuesday, until who knows, will be in the 70’s. This will last all the way through the week, and beyond. There is no rain in the forecast for the next 10 days.

If you want to see that stuff you must go to Seattle, where there are lows spinning and pulling up subtropical moisture.

Ok, not much more to say about our weather. It cannot get better….I wonder how many people will come down with the Flu today!!!

Enjoy one more great day in Santa Barbara. Tuesday will cool down by 7 degrees, but still 75.

1/26/18 Weekend Weather

Good Friday morning All,

I started my morning quite early, but the funny reading for me is how the national weather service labeled the title page.

HIGH FIRE DANGER   http://www.weather.gov/lox/  MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS !! What is left that can burn ??

Bottom line is, the Santa Ana winds are back.  Here we are round 3 of these winds, this week alone!! Today its Ventura and souths time for the winds to blow. Santa Barbara had there wind yesterday.

The valleys of Ojai and Santa Ynez are quite cold this morning and will be Saturday morning as well. However, once the sun comes out we will warm up nicely. A matter of fact, we will warm up each day. As discussed yesterday, we will warm up each day.

Sunday will be a chamber of commerce day in Santa Barbara. Not a lot more to say about the weather.

Its looking like we will be dry through Thursday or the rest of January . February will be upon us next week.

I know we have not talk much about that 4-letter word “Rain” but we really need some. Not all in one hour, but let’s hope for some in February. This is the last month that we typically get a lot of rain.

This will be the next topic on the news. From the flood areas, We are taking more baby steps to return people to their homes. It looks like all of San Ysidro area to East Valley Road is open now. One item to note… Take a look at all the rectangle boxes on the map.

They are all the bridges that are destroyed or have major damage

I was in south Montecito and Toro Canyon area yesterday. This is the first time I have been inside the area. The damage is amazing, especially where creeks were. Toro creek area is crazy and did not get hit as hard as the other areas. As I drove up Toro Canyon and went to East valley Rd right at the creek. The area is wide open now. No more trees there. Just boulders in and around the creeks.

Ok that’s it for today. Hopefully more people will get back into homes in those areas.

Have a nice weekend,

Jack Martin

Thursday Weather Update

Good Morning,

Did you miss me? We had a few days of no real excitement in weather, so I put my focus on real work stuff.

Now since we will have some action in the weather. I thought I needed to update you all. To tell the truth, the action is going to be limited. We have a system approaching out of the northwest that looks impressive in the picture.

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

This however will have little rain impact on Santa Barbara. This system will drop south overnight. You will find high clouds ahead of this today.

Tonight, we will catch the tail end. The good news is the low stays more over water, which is better for rain. However, the winds are going to be from the northwest. This is never good for Santa Barbara, because of our rain shadow. If any rain falls, it will be on the lighter side.

The real focus is on the cold air. Snow level will be at 2500 feet Friday night. Freezing temps are possible. Maybe 2 to 5 inches on the grapevine. If this happens the highway system going north is going to be a real mess, with 101 still closed.

Saturday will be cold. The low is going to keep us very cool though the weekend, but no rain.

Monday and Monday night. Another weak system approaches. This also is weak and if any rain falls it will be on the lighter side.

It now looks like our next real chance of rain will be a week from today. Although this is still too far out to make any rain predictions.

Stay tuned, and enjoy a cool weekend.

1/10/18 What a Difference 24 Hours Makes….

OMG what a crazy 24 hours for all the folks in Montecito to Carp. I was more in fear for La Conchita. I knew the creeks below the fire zone would be tested, but OMG who would have thought this would have happened.

Today the weather will help us with the clean-up. The low that created all the flash flooding is over Arizona now. We are left with sunny skies and a massive clean-up. I had to go to Coast Village Road yesterday and unclog the drains at Starbucks. The parking lot is a staging areas for bringing people in from homes where they were abandoned. Amazing to see the support teams in place.   http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?x=194&y=119&site=lox&zmx=&zmy=&map_x=194&map_y=119#.WlYs5ySIbxw

Ok weather wise:

As I mentioned yesterday, as soon as the winds switched from the north the rain would be over. Last evening that happened. Today and for the next 4 days, we will be dry and warm. Under high pressure, sunny and temps will climb into the 70s by the weekend .

Next week a gulf of Alaska storm tries to sneak in, but should stay north because it will be blocked by high pressure. Wednesday of next week we might see changes back to winter weather. We should however have a week to get cleaned up and back to normal. Amazing to think that we were worried about the ash 2 weeks age, and now it is about all the mud.

To any of my good friend in Montecito. I am so sorry for you guys. Anything I can do to help, I will drop everything I am doing and bring my guys there to help with the cleanup. You all know my cell phone. Please call me. I will make Action to help you…

1/8/18 Monday Has Arrived and Rain is Falling

Monday morning to all,

Well this is going to be an interesting day to watch. It looks like the lighter rain is starting everywhere but Santa Barbara right now. It smells like rain outside, it should start here soon. This is all thanks to moisture being pull up from the subtropical jet.

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

Today we will see light rain and lighter winds from the south. 10 to 15 miles an hour. The core of the storm is still to the northwest . You can see it well defined with the colors on the satellite picture. This part of the storm will arrive later tonight into Tuesday morning. In LA, commuter traffic on Tuesday will be a nightmare.

The heavy rain from the storm comes over night. It will get pretty wild. We will see flooding in the burn areas, just how much mud is mixed with the water is yet to come.

Carpentaria will be impacted the most, followed by the San Ysidro Rd, Ramero Canyon, and Sycamore Canyon areas. Creeks are going to be flowing like rivers.

Heavy rains should taper off by late morning Tuesday. Expect showers after that until Wednesday morning. You will know when the rain is going to end, by the wind . It will change from south to north.

Wednesday through the weekend will be dry, and mostly sunny. This will give us a chance to clean up the mess.

Rain totals

  • SB 3 inches
  • Costal 1 to 3 inches
  • Foothills 4 to 7 inches
  • South facing mountains 9 inches

Lots of wind for all tonight 30 to 60 miles an hour overnight.

Have a great day, rain today will not be that bad. Look out Tuesday morning.

1/3/18 Wednesday Forecast

Good Wednesday morning,

It looks like our weather should stay fairly dry today. If you look at the satellite picture. The cut-off low that was 1000 mile off LA yesterday, and is now 600 from point conception and moving northeast.

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

This is not good for southern California, if you want rain. It looks like the best chance of rain will be in Santa Ynez and SLO. If we get anything it will be late in the afternoon or tonight.

Thursday will be a transition day, and dry.

Friday there is another weak system that is going to do the same as todays system. Rain just to the north of us. Possibly brushing us with very little moisture.

Now let’s talk about the third system.

This one is looking much stronger. The only issue with this one, is when will it arrive.  Models are still all over the board on when rain will start. One is saying Sunday night, but all models are showing rain and heavier on Tuesday night. This will be the first big rain of the year for us. Depending on exactly how much sub-tropical moisture is tapped into.

So, looks like we will stay mostly dry the rest of the week. Then next week is the real rain maker. We will see how much we are talking about as the week gets closer to the end.

Ok get out there and make it happen.
