February 2016

2/29/16 Last day in Feb….Amen

Good Monday morning,

It is going to be an amen Monday for a number of reasons.

  1. This is the last day in February, which only brought us 1/3 of an inch of rain for the entire month.
  2. There is a change coming this week, and it looks good for a wet pattern starting some time next weekend.

For now however, February will go out as it has all month. Setting records for the month and year.

The first 3 days this week will be sunny and hot as high pressure builds back in.

Thursday the first change will be felt, but not looking good for rain, unless you are in SLO area.

Saturday a wetter stronger system is expected to arrive, bringing in rain through some periods into Tuesday.

So that’s the good news. We do truly need our March miracle… Let’s hope it happen.

Enjoy the great weather, because we are all hoping it goes away for a while

2/25/16 Fog is coming

Good Thursday morning,

Some slight changes for us. It looks like we will have our high pressure ridge move to the east, which will bring an onshore flow and fog to the coastal areas overnight, and into our Friday morning.

This is due to a weak system to the north of the area. Unfortunately this will not bring us any rain, just cooler conditions and some damp mornings.

The weekend is looking cooler, with mostly sunny skies.

On Monday a ridge builds back  in with another Santa Anna event Monday and Tuesday.

Yes, sadly March is here and no sign of rain through Wednesday.

Let’s hope that the change in the jet stream starts to happen at the end of next week.

Have a great weekend, maybe a little damp on that patio furniture.

2/23/16 Tuesday Update

Good Tuesday morning,

After doing this weather thing for a while, I think I am more aware of everything that happens. California weather, in this area is amazing to me.

Not sure if you felt it last night, but around 8 PM a light breeze came up from the northeast. The temp immediately went up. It was the Santa Anna winds warming us up. Santa Anna winds are going to be the story for the next 2 days. Santa Anna’s will bring warm days and nights, with wind to the south and a slight breeze for us in Santa Barbara.

Thursday we will see some cooling and then Friday we should see the marine layer show up. Yes, I am sure you are thinking the same as me “what is a Marine layer”!?!   We have not seen that in a long time.

The weekend was advertising a weak front coming through. This is still up in the air. We will see how it plays out the rest of the week.

Cool down for sure this weekend.

In the meantime, perfect weather. It does not get better than this for us.

 Have a great day ….

2/22/16 Another Week of Sunshine

Good Monday morning,

What a great weekend it was. Not to hot and lots of sunshine. I was barbequing fresh fish last night and felt the light sundowner winds come up. It warmed up the air to 70 degrees.

This week is going to be another warm start to the week.  Santa Anna winds are going to kick up Tuesday or Wednesday. You know what that means, 80s for all and winds to the south.

The end of the week, we are looking for a cool down and a chance of rain late in the week….

Have a great Monday; it will be a warm one

2/19/16 Weekend Weather and Beyond

Here we go again.

Another sunny weekend ahead, although much cooler than the last.

Here are the rain totals from the last storm.

SB and the SY valley got around 1/2 in inch, and the big winner was San Marcos pass with an inch of rain.

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/lox/scripts/getlocal.php?prod=LAXRRMSBA

Now for the forecast.

Sunshine all next week.

Yes, this is another one of those disappointing forecast. Looks like we will start out cooler for the next few days, then Santa Anna’s kick back in. The first half of the week will likely be in the 80s, and then cool off towards the end of the week.

The only good news is February is almost over, and the weather gods predict a change in the pattern in the beginning of March…. We are running out of time, so it better happen quickly…

Have a nice weekend, highs in the low 70s. Cool at night…

2/17/16 Rain

By Jack Martin on Feb 17, 2016 at 07:54 AM

How quickly it will change. Right now looking just like it has been for the past 2 weeks, sunny, although a little cooler. It may be looking like the start of a typical day, but DON’T BE FOOLED.

It will change quickly. By 10 am we will see the clouds start to stream in.

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/lox/scripts/animate.php?root=sat_16km&list=IR16.GIF.3.jpg,IR16.GIF.4.jpg,IR16.GIF.5.jpg,IR16.GIF.6.jpg,IR16.GIF.7.jpg,IR16.GIF.8.jpg

Rain will start up right after lunch. This is thanks to the plume of moisture being pulled up from the south, taking dead aim for Santa Barbara. This will bring us moderate to heavy rain this afternoon.

Tonight more rain will fall as the front from the north drops down.

Rain totals have been growing with each of the model runs, and is still changing at this point. We will see at least 1/2 inch of rain. I think Santa Barbara; because of our south face will get at least an inch.

Mountains will receive 1 to 2 inches.Rain emoji

Tonight after the front rolls through the winds really come up. Expect winds of 45 miles an hour over night.windemoji

Rain will be all but over Thursday and a warm up will begin for the next 5 days after that

                                          Enjoy the fun …..

2/16/16 Rain In The Forecast

Ok, one more day of record heat…. looks like mid-to-high 80s again today.

Wednesday will bring the change. Cooler temps and rain will occur. Its looking like rain could even start in the afternoon now. (2 ish.)

Round 2 of the rain will start later in the evening and fall into the morning hours. Rain should taper off right around 8 am Thursday. Forecasts are showing some decent rain total for us, thanks to some south winds. We might see closer to the 1/2 inch mark.

After the rain event, it is looking to turn back to dry conditions. This will persist all the way through February.

The only good news is they are still predicting a pattern change in the beginning of March, bringing back wet weather.

In the meantime, it seems we will get only one day of rain in February. That’s sad, considering February is normally our wettest month.

2/10/16 Mid Week Weather Update

Happy Wednesday,

It will be the Last day of record heat. A matter of fact it should be 5 or so degrees cooler today. Tuesday we shattered the record high with 91 degrees…

Not sounding like a broken record.. We will continue to have temps 5 to 10 degrees above normal into next week.

There will be a cool down Thursday and Saturday. Dropping into the lower 70s, then temps rebound a little each day.

Next Wednesday 2 of the forecast models are still calling for rain, advertising a medium size storm. ( for what that is worth or means) Also a pattern change is still predicted for the end of the month. Leaving us some hope for rain and El Niño ….

We can only wish for another March miracle

Enjoy the summer weather in February high of 85 today

2/9/16 Warm Weather

Let’s start with today’s good news… If you like sunny and warm, it is good news. Today will break records… 90s for most…..

You can see a giant Dome of high pressure over southern California http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/lox/scripts/animate.php?root=sat_16km&list=IR16.GIF.3.jpg,IR16.GIF.4.jpg,IR16.GIF.5.jpg,IR16.GIF.6.jpg,IR16.GIF.7.jpg,IR16.GIF.8.jpg

It is going to be sunny and above normal temps all week, some cooling Thursday and Saturday into the mid-70s, but still above normal…

Now next week there is a storm system, possible for next Wednesday…. This is still way out in space… But trying to keep our faith for more rain. On the upside there is still supposed to be a pattern change towards the end of Feb… So we are hoping this means lots of rain….

In the meantime, hot weather …. I might have to turn my sprinklers back on for a few days….

Summer in February …. Have a great day all!

2/3/16 Weather Warm Up

Yes, sunny skies for at least the next 7 to 10 days… That is a very SAD forecast when we need rain and February is only 29 days long.

At this rate it will put us into mid-February before we get our next shot of rain….

It looks like high pressure is going to take over and send all the systems to the north.

Weather will be sunny and begin to warm up the rest of the week. The weekend into next week will really begin to warm up with temps in the upper 70s into the low 80s.

Time to get out those dancing shoes and pray for rain…

Enjoy the sunshine…. that’s all we have to look forward to for now

2/2/16 Happy Ground Hog Day

Well, the ground hog did not see his shadow.  Spring is to start early, if you believe that crap. It certainly is not Spring around here. It is downright cold out there.

thermometer32 in the Santa Ynez Valley and 39 in SB… That’s cold for us spoiled Californians.

Today is starting out cold, and then a short wave will come though this afternoon. You can see it on the satellite picture (that means clouds and a weak system)

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/lox/scripts/animate.php?root=sat_16km&list=IR16.GIF.3.jpg,IR16.GIF.4.jpg,IR16.GIF.5.jpg,IR16.GIF.6.jpg,IR16.GIF.7.jpg,IR16.GIF.8.jpg

This will only bring us some clouds, and then wind will be back late this afternoon and night.

The wind event will be nothing like winds on Sunday night, but you will know it is present.

Dry weather the rest of the week and weekend. Looks like another short wave Thursday, no rain.

Friday it warms up for a nice weekend in Southern California.hammock

Looks like the ridge will break down early next week bringing us a chance of rain Tuesday or so.

Ok dress warm today. It is cold out there

chilly

2/1/16 The good, the bad and the ugly

Yes, we had all in the forecast yesterday and this coming week.

Let’s start with yesterday

The good, was the rain. San Marcos pass had 3.5 inches of rain http://www.cnrfc.noaa.gov/precipMaps.php?group=sv&img=3

Other areas had 2 plus inches on south facing areas. Santa Barbara had a little over an inch.

The bad, was it did not rain long enough, then the winds came with a furry. My god it blew hard…. I was at la Cumbre plaza and I could barely walk to Macys.

Now the ugly… Of course the damage from the wind, trees were down in numerous areas due to the wind. Yes, as reported yesterday these winds were an event that happens once a decade.

Now this week

The good is we are going to have dry weather all week. No more rain, one day more day of wind.

The bad is no more rain for the next 7 days. With February being a short month we need to get on the rain thing.

The ugly!!! Well we need rain… More, more and more. Looks like we will be getting into off shore flow mid-week and temps will warm up into the low 80s by the end of the week.

Ok that’s it for now… Have a nice day and week
