April 2018

4/27/18 Weekend Weather

Good Friday morning,

It feels good to have the week winding down. It has been a busy week.

It looks like the low over the central coast will be moving east over SF area.

This will do nothing more than cause wind in our area. Expect sundowner winds tonight from the northwest. 10 to 20 miles an hour with gusts to 30.

The good news from the winds, is it will blow the fog away. Mornings will start with sun, but days will be 2 to 3 degrees below normal. Highs in the upper 60s.

Sunday and Monday the winds will calm and we will see sunshine and cooler temps.

Tuesday, a new low arrives… no good reading on this, but in the forecast discussions they are hinting a chance of rain for SLO to LA.

Depending on how the low moves, if and where the rain may occur, it will be less than 1/4 of an inch. We will just wait and see what happens Sunday, before we make any predictions on this.

Wednesday and Thursday, high pressure builds back in…

ok enjoy the weekend…next report Sunday, getting you ready for the work week. And the new month. Wow it’s May…

Have a great weekend!

4/25/18 Good Wednesday Morning

As promised, Wednesday is here. So is my mid-week forecast.

Really not a lot of excitement, typical spring action. Here is the low pressure that will influence the weather through Friday. Spinning off shore.

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

This really is not going to do more than keep us cooler, with night and morning fog. May is almost here and we are starting the month called May Gray….

In Southern California, temps will remain on the cool side throughout the next 6 days at least. Highs in the 60s along the coast, valleys in the low 70s “at best.”

Spring also means wind; this is most noticeable as systems roll through and cause pressure gradients, or wind.

Santa Barbara will be spot lighted with sundowner winds Thursday and Friday nights.

Santa Ynez Valley and Lompoc, you know the routine…calm mornings and wind in the afternoons.

What’s up with the weekend?

Nice, but sweatshirt weather. Much cooler than the last two weekends. All good. Get some chores done around the house.

Next week, you ask…

Well, another low pressure system. There is a hint of a slight chance of rain. We will wait and see how real this becomes, but don’t hold your breath.

For this time of year in Southern CA, it is not likely.

Ok you are up to date on the weather front.

Go out and make yourself proud …

4/23/18Monday Morning

Here we go, the last week in April. How quickly they fly by… Oh and Cindy’s birthday…

Happy Birthday….

This week’s weather is looking very bland. No excitement and no rain until Friday.

Looks like some low clouds and fog some mornings, then clearing after.

This trend is all the way through Friday. It does look like a weak low could cause maybe some drizzle late in the week. It will cool us down some for sure. We will let Wednesday come, before we really start to talk about this.

I really did not talk about the rain last week. We received around 1/10 of an inch and north counties 1/4. It was nice to see a bit of rain. The most we will see from this point into and through the summer will be drizzle….

https://www.wrh.noaa.gov/lox/scripts/getlocal.php?prod=LAXRRMSBA

Have a good week.

Update Wednesday.

4/19/18 Rain in April

Good Thursday morning,

Yes, it is raining ….the rain woke me at 4 am. Just like an alarm clock…

The low pressure system held together nicely and is bringing us some moderate showers.

  http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

This should pass through in the next few hours and bring us cooler temps and a few showers on north facing mountains.

This system rotated counter clockwise, dropped right down the coast, and gave us some late season rain, just as predicted.

Once the rain goes, we will have a breezy cool afternoon, with highs in the 60s.

Snow level is even down to 4000 feet, so an inch of snow is possible in higher elevations.

Tonight, the sundowner winds should return, as high pressure will build back in.

Look for a warming period, Friday through the weekend, with mild weather. Inland, like Santa Ynez, we might even see 90 degrees.

Santa Barbara will see some fog and low clouds in the morning. This will cool us some, with highs in the 70s.

Next week is looking bland and seasonable, with no big excitement…

Enjoy the rain; you will not see this for another 6 months.

Look at the Snow!

4/18/18 Interesting Night Ahead

Good Wednesday morning,

We have lots to talk about tonight and into Thursday morning.

First of all, did you see the Moon and Venus glowing next to each other last night? It was a pretty cool sight to see. You have one more chance to view it tonight, right after sunset; look for the moon to the west.

http://earthsky.org/tonight

You will see both glowing next to each other in the sky. Cool sight for kids and grownups.

4/17/18 Tuesday, The Real Tax Day Weather

Thank you Washington DC for delaying Tax day. Did you know that Monday was a holiday, Emancipation Day in Washington, D.C.

My tax dollars hard at work.

I paid my taxes early.

I have a great idea… I think for all the government holidays that the people work instead of having a day off, should not have to pay taxes for those days…

Ok Weather…

The good news is the wind event is over. Winds blew stuff everywhere yesterday afternoon and night. My pool is a mess….

Today we will warm up 5 to 10 degrees from yesterday.

Wednesday another nice day, but another low starts to roll in. Wednesday night into Thursday, a cold low pressure system knocks on our doors. This one looks like it might even hold together bringing a little rain to all areas. Unlike yesterday’s system, the rain made it as close as Gaviota.

Wednesday night and Thursday looks to bring the rain over us. Well let’s not get too excited…

Rain is going to be 1/10 of an inch, but I guess we will take whatever is offered. Maybe it will keep the hills greener a little longer.

Thursday looks like our normal wind event that occurs; after the front passes it will be much milder than Monday’s wind.

Friday and into the weekend, look for a nice warm up. Inland areas will see 80s and 90s.

Coastal will stay somewhat cooler with coastal fog, then sunshine.

Ok, that’s a wrap for the day. This is what the skies look like right now.

  http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

4/13/18 Weekend Forecast

Good news,

We made it through the wind event…. just in time for a great weekend in Santa Barbara and the Santa Ynez valley…

If you decide to go wine tasting in Santa Ynez valley, you will find highs in the low 80s.

Drinking Sun

Perfect weather…For taking in the mountain views and great wine.

Santa Barbara, well the same, with highs in the upper 70s. Great weekend for all outdoor activities.

For Ventura south, you guys will need to fight a little wind starting today. Northeast Santa Ana winds will blow 15 to 20 miles an hour, with gusts of 35 miles an hour.

Mark come to SB, I’ll buy you a glass of wine.

https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-119.03068542480467&lat=34.200444759541085#.WtCq9IplCfA

Beyond the great weekend, we will bounce back and forth next week with high and low pressure systems.

This means northwest winds Monday night and again Wednesday evenings. Winds this next round should be lighter.

No rain in sight, at least below SLO County…

Enjoy great weather. Dust off the sunscreen, you might need some.

hammock

4/12/18 Windy Thursday Morning

Yes, the winds have arrived…. around 3pm yesterday, the wind started and overnight it was howling. Today, all day, will be quite windy in the Santa Barbara, Gaviota, Lompoc, Santa Ynez Valley. Wind will blow though the day at 20 plus miles an hour, with another sundowner wind event this tonight.

Right now there is a weak low pressure system passing over us. This will bring no rain, but of course wind.

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

On Friday, we will hand the wind off to Ventura. Just like a relay race. Off shore winds will rattle Ventura, and points south through Friday.

This will also create a nice warm up. Everyone will see highs in the upper 70s Friday and into Saturday. Highs in the valleys Saturday should climb to the mid-80s.

Sunday, another weak low pressure system brings back on shore flow. Chances for rain are about the same as today, almost 0 for us.

Of course the relay will pass the wind back to us in the SB areas Sunday night and Monday.

Tuesday warmer, Wednesday another weak system…. just the same typical spring pattern…. every few days….

Yes, we can now call our rainy season to a close…. the likelihood of more than 1/4 of an inch at some time is very low…

Ok, that’s all for today, wind continues… I will see what I have to fish out of my pool when the sun rises.

Enjoy a nice weekend.

4/11/18 Wednesday Forecast

Good Wednesday morning,

Are you ready for some wind…ready or not here is comes for the next 2 days.

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

High pressure is going to be replaced with low pressure today. The heat from the last 2 days will be a past memory. The low pressure system will bring significant cooling, so cool that the snow level will drop to 3500 feet in the mountains.

For us, it is all about the wind. wind (white)The change in pressure is going to give us typical north to northwest winds. These will come up this afternoon and go through Thursday night.

Tonight or this evening we will see typical northwest sun downer winds. Winds will blow up to 60 miles an hour tonight. Winds will continue in typical northwest areas though Thursday night.

On Friday, we shift to northeast winds, so Ventura will get hit. Santa Barbara will warm up, with a nice warm weekend ahead.

Next week we bounce back to wind and cooler for the start of the week, a very typical spring pattern.

Low pressure systems all look to keep any rain to the north of our area. Monday’s system should catch Santa Ynez and north, but will not have enough punch to round point conception and get into Santa Barbara.

There is also a slight chance of rain tonight, but mainly over north facing mountains.

Rain likely will not get any further south than SLO.

Ok get ready for the wind…. good thing Swanny is still hibernating for the winter.

4/10/18 Good Tuesday Morning

Hope everyone had a nice weekend, I had a slightly extended one in San Diego.

It was nice there on Monday, but nothing like the record breaking 96 degrees here.

Today we will get a bit of a break from the heat. Highs will still be above normal, but stay in the 70s instead of the 90s.

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

Wednesday, we cool more as low pressure approaches from the north.

This is a typical spring pattern, where we have systems from the north cutting off right above us.

What this really does is bring us cooler weather, and wind. There is a slight chance of rain Wednesday night, but this is really areas to the north, SLO and north.

On Thursday, we change back to high pressure. The heat will return though Saturday. We will have some coastal fog, so the interior areas will be the ones to heat up.  We will stay nice and in the 70s.

Sunday, we start all over again with some cooling as the next system rolls in from the north.

Another slight chance of rain early next week.

Welcome to our spring, wind, cooler. Followed by warmer Santa Ana conditions.

Just an FYI, San Diego was great. Took the train to avoid traffic. $130 round trip in business class.

Also a must in San Diego is the Shout House. Dueling pianos, it was the best for cheap.

Stay in the Gaslamp district. Lots of fun, people, and tons of restaurants. You can walk to everywhere.

Ok, I am back in Action… enjoy the week ….

4/6/18 Weekend Weather

Good Friday morning,

Another week gone…

Take a look at the Pineapple Express over Northern California. They are getting what we had a week ago.

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

For us, another day and slight changes to our forecast.

As reported yesterday, the low is staying further to the north, which will keep the bulk of the rain there.

The low pressure system is almost stationary right now just pumping rain from San Francisco north.

The low will begin to sag tonight and shift some rain our way. This system, however, is really going to fall apart as it rounds point conception.

Looks like all areas Santa Ynez and north will begin to see rain over night into Saturday.

Santa Barbara should see the same Saturday morning, but it now looks like the buck stops over SB. No rain is likely Ventura and south.

Rain totals still look good for SLO County at up to 1.25 inches and around 1/2 for Santa Ynez. Then they drop off to 1/10 to 1/3 for Santa Barbara.

The rain event should be over by noon.

As far as wind goes, they are talking about 5 to 15 miles an hour from the north, with 20 mile an hour gusts. This is typical after low pressure rolls through and will be manageable.

Sunday will be nice and good weather rolls through next week. Inland valley (Santa Ynez) will see 80s.

It looks like a few weak systems roll to the north, but should not affect our area, with rain at least.

From the earthquake front, I was driving so I did not feel it, but I had a number of people call me and ask if I felt it. It was 5.3 and center at Santa Cruz Island off the coast of Ventura.

No damage, but a few people remembered that we have earthquakes here….

I have my new back-up generator all set up now, in case the big one comes and we lose power.

Everyone can come to my house…

highfivesmiley

A rough office day for Pearl.

Pearly

Have a great weekend.

I am off to San Diego for 2 days for a weekend getaway.

4/5/18 Good Thursday Morning

Well here it is. Nice weather satellite picture of the Action in the Pacific. It looks pretty impressive right!!!

Well not for us…..

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

The ever changing forecast took a turn backwards for our rain totals in the past 24 hours, where this system and the train of subtropical moisture looks nice on the maps.

It is staying further to the north than predicted yesterday. This means point conception and south will see less rain. Northern areas will see good rain fall, but LA looks now to get nothing.

Today, fog will clear much earlier. A good spring day with highs in the high 60s.

Friday looks to remain dry for all areas, except SLO county.

Friday night into Saturday, the low sags and pushes moisture into our area.

Saturday we will all see lighter rain, but they are now talking about that ending around noon.

Ventura, you are on the south edge. You might see 1/10 of an inch.

Santa Barbara 1/4 to 1/3.

Santa Ynez ½.

Areas of SLO up to 1 1/4 inches.

Sunday we clear up till at least Tuesday, with a weak system approaching some time Tuesday. This looks to keep the rain to the north at this point.

Ok, this is the scoop for the day. Let’s see if there are any changes on Friday morning!!!

Kamala, it looks like you are in much better shape this morning for the Saturday wedding….

Have a great day!

4/4/18 Wednesday Forecast…..Rain is on the Horizon

Good morning,

We are getting closer to some spring showers. The forecast is now more definite on the rain event starting Friday and Saturday.

I have decided that Kamela needs to have more events at her house in drought years, because the only time it rains is when she has an outdoor event.

So, let’s start with current. Then we will talk about the rain.

Today and Thursday is easy….looks like night and morning fog and clouds, then sunshine in the afternoons. Highs in the upper 60s.

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

Friday the change begins…

Now it looks like SLO, Santa Ynez, and Santa Barbara can all see rain on Friday during the day, starting late morning. The rain to start will be on the light side, with no more then 1/4 of an inch.

Ventura and south should stay dry.

Friday night and Saturday, it will be raining. This will be a lighter rain with accumulation of 1/3 to 2/3 of an inch over Santa Ynez and SB. Areas north will see upwards to an inch or so.

Ventura and south will get 1/4 to 1/2 an inch.

Rain will end by late Saturday afternoon.

Looks like dry weather returns through Tuesday, then a weak system may affect SLO and to the north.

That’s the scoop for now…

Spring showers are on the way.

4/3/18 Tuesday Forecast and Rain is coming

Great Tuesday morning,

What a game last night, just as long as you are a Nova fan. Donte DiVincenzo, was in a Zone firing up 31 points for Nova.

Did you see that 2 handed block?….. So good, so fun….

I love all college sports….. Congrats to Vila with 2 championships this year…..

Oh, weather…. yes we have that too…

Today, those low clouds will stick around less, and sunshine will return for Dina’s birthday.

Through Thursday, we will be under an off shore flow, which will warm us up and give us less fog.

Wednesday night look for a sundowner wind event for Santa Barbara. Winds will come up around 6pm.

Friday, the next storm system moves into north county. Rain will start up on Friday then move south. Looking like Santa Ynez and Santa Barbara will see rain over night Friday into Saturday. Ventura and LA should see rain by Saturday morning.

Everything clears out Saturday, late, and sunshine returns on Sunday.

This is a cold system for this time of year, also quite wet. Northern areas are looking at 1 to 2 inches of rain, then the rain will spread south with 1/3 to 2/3 of an inch for us.

This will not be a barn burner, but will keep our mountains green though April.

Ok that’s it for today….

Have a great day…this is what it looks like from the sky.

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

4/2/18 April 2nd Forecast

Good Monday morning,

It is the start of a new month. I hope everyone had a great Easter. The weather was not the best, but it was not bad enough to hamper outdoor activities, you just needed a sweat shirt.

We will have one more day like Sunday, lots of low clouds and fog today, with highs in the 60s.

http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/west/nepac/h5-loop-wv.html

Tuesday, high pressure draws closer and clearing will come earlier. Mild off shore flow will build in.

Wednesday looks to have off shore flow move closer. This will give us sunnier sky’s and warm up.

Thursday, more of the same. Nice day.

Friday, still looking good for us, but a storm system will begin to approach from the north west.

Friday night into Saturday, rain should start up to the north then drop south to us late Saturday.

Saturday night into Sunday, looks like rain. Tough to say how much at this point.

Heavier rain to the north and lighter to the south.

As always, stay tuned for more Action to come.

In the meantime, NCAA national championship tonight. Going to be a great college game. Go Villanova …… 20 miles from my birth place….

Tuesday, Dina’s birthday. Big 39…..

Ok you are ready for the week, smile.
